David Gallup is a plein air painter and teacher who cares deeply about the environment. He creates works that exquisitely capture a sense of place. A broad color palette and multi-layered paint only partially describe the paintings. He explores nature’s character in the fog, rain, glare and darkness. During his years as a student at Otis Art Institute, David supported himself as a writer, illustrator and cartoonist. After earning his degree, he worked closely with renowned Japanese artist Hiro Yamagata, assisting him in the production of the iconic “Earthly Paradise” collection. Gallup’s work was a part of the Museum of Ventura County’s exhibit celebrating the 25 anniversary of Channel Islands National Park. He is a much sought-after educator who delights in taking a boat load of artists to the Channel Islands and who encourages each student to look for the spirit of nature. Paintings from trips to the islands have become a collection that will be exhibited at The Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine beginning May 21. Join Donna Granata on April 9 when she explores the natural art of David Gallup.
