CINEMA THURSDAY – 17 March 2011, 6.30/7pm, at the KZNSA Gallery

This coming week (ie Thursday the 17th March) we'll be screening our first film in our theme of the Dark and Lovely - the bizarre and wonderful, and very, very dark Taxidermia.

This film replaces Playing the Victim on our programme, because we had some technical problems with the copy of the originally scheduled film. We're working on it, and will hopefully bring you Playing the Victim later on in the year. It's part of the hazard
of bringing you cinematic rarities. Sometimes they can be elusive.

Cinema Thursday rakes place every first and third Thursday of the month. In March we will have an extra, third Thursday screening on the 31st. But you can see exactly what we've got lined up for you on Thursday, when we'll be distributing programmes for the next three months at the upcoming screening.

Bring your blankets, chairs, snacks, wine etc (the bar isn't open, but you're welcome to bring your own picnics) to this outdoor screening on the gallery lawn. There is no charge - it's a totally free event. If it rains, we have an alternative indooor screening space, so don't stay away.

See you on Thursday!

TAXIDERMIA (2006), Dir. György Pálfi, Hungary, 99'

An anthology film directed by Gyorgy Palfi and based on two short stories by Lajos Parti Nagy (with a third story added by Palfi and co-writer Zsofia Ruttkay), Taxidermia follows three generations of men through World War II, Communist-era Hungary, and the present.

The film follows three generations of men, beginning with an unfortunate soldier called Vendel serving a cruel lieutenant at a remote military outpost in Hungary during the Second World War. Forced to live in a freezing shack, he develops an unhealthy sexual obsession for his superior’s wife and daughter which leads to tragic and revolting consequences. The result is the birth of his son Kalman, who grows up to become one of the country’s top speed eaters, entering competitions organised by the communist regime. Although hugely overweight, he finds love with an equally large lady, though has to contend for her affections with an ambitious fellow ‘athlete’. The final section follows his son Lajos, a thin wiry man who looks after his now morbidly obese father while carrying out his trade as a taxidermist and raising monstrously large cats.

Despite the relentless torrent of repulsive imagery, “Taxidermia” is no mere freakshow or slice of empty shock cinema, as Palfi consistently manages to find the humanity in his characters, and instead of simply parading them he strives to bring their stories to life. He explores the three men’s respective corporeal obsessions - sex, food, and taxidermy - and shows a bleakly funny and thoughtful contemplation of the human animal. It’s a visceral, grotesque experience, and certainly not for the easily offended.
