How do we strive to touch something infinite with our material forms? What is the resonance between the bodies we inhabit and the forms we create? What is the relationship between what we call dance and spiritual practice and theory?
These are some of the questions that occupy legendary choreographer Alonzo King in the creation of his work. King, Artistic Director of LINES Ballet and founder of the
BFA at Dominican Dance Program, brings his philosophy of dance to share with you in the warm environment of the Dominican Heritage & Alumni House at 7pm on April 7. Mr. King will be in conversation with Gay Lynch, Associate Professor of Religion at Dominican. Questions from the audience will be taken following the talk.
Alonzo King's works are in the repertoires of the Ballets de Monte Carlo, the Swedish Royal Ballet, and the Hong Kong Ballet as well as the Joffrey and Ailey companies.
He has collaborated with actor Danny Glover, legendary jazz saxophonist
Pharaoh Sanders, Hamza al Din, Pawel Szymanski, Jason Moran and tabla master Zakir Hussain. Renowned for his skill as a teacher, King has been guest ballet master for dance companies around the globe. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom
presented the Mayor's Art Award to Alonzo King in October 2008, calling him a
"San Francisco treasure."
