New Exhibits:


Nature Visions: Photographs by Brian Wolf in the Kenosha Public Museum's West Gallery April 30 through Oct. 2, 2011. Wolf is a photographer from Kenosha who visits natural parks and wilderness areas. He has gathered thousands of stunning images, from plants and animals to breathtaking vistas, with a Nikon single lens digital camera and a variety of lenses. His images can be seen at nature centers and other educational and promotional outlets, as well as in the award winning photography/poetry book, Lingering... Soulful Reflections. A reception and book signing will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 8 on the second floor Friends Gallery Mezzanine.

African Art & Culture Exhibit opens April 30 in the Mary Frost Ashley Treasures Gallery at the Kenosha Public Museum.

Kenosha Unified School District Student Art Show April 1-23 at the East and West Galleries of the Kenosha Public Museum

Transparent Watercolor Society of America Annual National Show: May 7 through July 31 in the East and South Galleries of the Kenosha Public Museum. An opening reception will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 8 on the second floor Friends Gallery Mezzanine.

Friday, April 1: KUSD Student Art Show opening reception 5:30-8 p.m. at the Kenosha Public Museum gallery and mezzanine. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 2: Kenosha Public Museum Workshop: Josephine Knot Basket 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. with instructor Sandy Bulgrin. Cost is $37. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 2: Civil War Museum Workshop: Basic Soap Making 1:30-3:30 p.m. with instructor Laura Zielinski. Soap making was a necessary domestic activity during the Civil War era. Participants will create a mild soap using lye and oils. A supply fee of $13 is paid to the instructor. Cost of the class is $15. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 2: Dinosaur Discovery Museum Dino Digs 1-4 p.m. Experience the excitement of excavating a fossil. Free and open to the public.

Sunday, April 3: Civil War Museum workshop: Southeast China Cuisine 2:30-4:30 p.m. with instructor Ying Stoller. The demonstration includes beef noodle soup, papaya salad and Vietnamese spring rolls. Cost is $25. Advance registration is required

Wednesday, April 6: Civil War Museum Workshop: Digging Deeper Into Fashion 7-8:30 p.m. with museum curator Brett Lobello. The discussion will focus on Civil War era fashions and includes a visit to the “Bodices, Bonnets and Weeds” exhibit on display. Cost is $10. Advance registration is required.

Thursday, April 7: Kenosha Public Museum Bus Trip: Mummies in Milwaukee 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Milwaukee Public Museum and its “Mummies of the World” exhibition is the destination for the trip. The cost includes the exhibit audio tour, a gourmet box lunch and a planetarium presentation, “Stars of the Pharaohs.” Cost is $85. Advance registration is required.

Friday, April 8: Civil War Museum Program: Fort Sumter: The Civil War Trigger Point 12 p.m. Bruce Klemm will talk about the secession of South Carolina, the build up to the bombardment, the shelling of Ft. Sumter and the history of the fort defensive system in the United States. The lecture is part of the second Friday Lunchbox Lecture series and is free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 9: Civil War Museum Workshop: Intermediate Soap Making 1:30-3:30 p.m. with instructor Laura Zielinski. Learn how to add color and fragrance to handmade soap. A supply fee of $15 is paid to the instructor. Cost of the class is $15. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 9: Civil War Museum Workshop: Illinois Early Regiments 1-2:30 p.m. with instructor Tom Arliskas. Arliskas presents a collection of notes and photos on the history, weapons and uniforms supplied to Illinois troops Cost is $15. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 9: Kenosha Public Museum's Southport Rendezvous 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The fur-trading era is the focus as visitors watch costumed reenactors demonstrate various crafts and skills of the 1700s and early 1800s. People can participate in games that children would have played in the Museum's Trading Post. The program is free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 9: Kenosha County Archaeological Society Meeting 1:30 p.m. in Freedom Hall at the Civil War Museum. Kathleen Winkler will speak on “Oneota and Langford Mortuary Practices from Southeastern Wisconsin and Northeast Illinois.” The program is free and open to the public.

Sunday, April 10: Sunday Funday activities at the Kenosha Public Museum, Civil War Museum and Dinosaur Discovery Museum 1-4 p.m. “You Are the Artist” is the theme. Children are welcome to create their own works of art, which will be displayed at all three museums. The free family program is sponsored by the Friends of the Museums.

Sunday, April 10: Kenosha Art Association Spring Art Event 12:30 -4:30 p.m. at the Kenosha Public Museum. A public reception begins at 1 p.m., followed by a presentation from guest speaker Sandra Nowicki at 2 p.m. Awards will be announced at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Tuesday, April 12: Kenosha Public Museum Workshop: Fused Glass Jewelry 6-8:30 p.m. with instructor Jayne Herring. Make up to four pendants. A supply fee of $25 is paid to the instructor. Cost of the class is $22. Advance registration is required.

Thursday, April 14: Civil War Museum Program: Wisconsin Answers the Call 7 p.m. Lance Herdegen talks about the firing on Fort Sumter, which stirred Northern patriotic spirit. The program is sponsored by the Milwaukee Civil War Round Table and Iron Brigade Association, and is free and open to the public.

Friday, April 15: Dinosaur Discovery Museum Dino Digs 1-4 p.m. Experience the excitement of excavating a fossil. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, April 16: Civil War Museum Workshop: Dances of the Civil War Era 1-3 p.m. Patricia Lynch and members of the West Side Victorian Dancers will teach basic dances of the Civil War era and proper etiquette for a formal ball. (Participants are welcome to dress in casual attire.) Cost is $10. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 16: Civil War Museum Grand Union Ball 7-10 p.m. Live music, desserts and beverages will be featured at the ball, which is the kick-off to the Civil War Museum's Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration. Civil War era evening wear is encouraged but not required. Cost is $25. Advance registration is required.

Sunday, April 17: Civil War Museum Workshop: Cooking with Five Ingredients or Less 2:30-4:30 p.m. with instructor Rita Ramacci. Cost is $25. Advance registration is required.

Sunday, April 17: Civil War Museum Workshop: Beginning Genealogy 1:30-3:30 p.m. with instructor Jean Hoffmann. Cost is $15. Advance registration is required.

Tuesday, April 19: Kenosha Public Museum Bus Trip: Genealogy Research in Madison 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The destination is the Wisconsin Historical Society Library and Archives, where people may explore materials to aid in family research. Museum genealogy workshop instructor Jean Hoffman leads the trip. Cost is $50. Lunch is on your own. Advance registration is required.

Wednesday, April 20: Civil War Museum Program: Collection of Benjamin Franklin White 1 p.m. Museum curator Doug Dammann will present a 30-minute program on a collection of items from a surgeon of the First Wisconsin. The program is free and open to the public.

Friday, April 22: Museums closed for Good Friday

Saturday, April 23: Dinosaur Discovery Museum Dino Digs 1-4 p.m. Experience the excitement of excavating a fossil. Free and open to the public.

Sunday, April 24: Museums closed for Easter

Friday, April 29: Dinosaur Discovery Museum Program: Dino Storytelling at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Saturday, April 30: Kenosha Public Museum Workshop: Improve Your Vacation Photos 9:30-11:30 a.m. with instructor Brian Wolf. The class is designed for point and shoot camera-users. Cost is $15. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 30: Kenosha Public Museum Workshop: Mosaic Bird Bath 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. with instructor Kathy Alexander. People are welcome to bring any special items they wish to incorporate in the project. A supply fee of $22 is paid to the instructor. Cost of the class is $30. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 30: Kenosha Public Museum Family Workshop: Relaxing Bath Salts 1-3 p.m. with instructor Laura Zielinski. A supply fee of $10 is paid to the instructor. Cost of the class is $17. Advance registration is required.

Saturday, April 30: Civil War Museum Program: Baseball in the Civil War 12 p.m. The Milwaukee Creams and the Delton Base Ball club will present a program, demonstrate reproduction 19th century equipment and play an exhibition match outside the museum. The public can participate in batting practice, fielding and running the bases. The free program is sponsored by the Milwaukee Civil War Round Table and Iron Brigade Association.
