FRIDAY 25 MARCH, 6-9PM & SATURDAY 26 MARCH, 12-6PM OPEN STUDIOS: ANDRÉ GUEDES AND UMESH KUMAR You are invited to Open Studios at Gasworks - meet the artists, see their work in progress and on Friday night, have a drink on us! On Friday at 7pm, join us for a curator's tour of Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc's solo exhibition. Artists André Guedes (Portugal) and Umesh Kumar (India) open their studios to the public to develop a dialogue with audiences on their work in progress. During his residency, André Guedes has been researching the working classes' restricted access to culture in the UK, during and after the industrial revolution. This research will lead up to a performance piece, to be premièred at Gasworks in May. For the open studios, mid-way through his 6-month residency, Guedes will display work from an ongoing project entitled Odd and Even Pages from the Wonders of the 20th Century. In a series of diptychs, Guedes generates new relations and narratives from the imagery on the book's pages. Umesh Kumar has spent much of the recent months researching British art from the last decade, as well as looking at the Arte Povera movement and its enduring influence in contemporary practice. He also continues to explore a long-standing preoccupation with themes of displacements, conflicts and divides, in relation to his homeland. For the open studios, Umesh will display a set of works drawn from his research, using basic materials alongside every-day objects and photography. These works will address some of his formal concerns including his interest in materiality and - in his words - the idea of 'impoverished materials'.
