dear designboom reader,

on march 11th, 2011, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit japan north of tokyo,
causing a devastating tsunami and immense damage on land. still battling power
outages and explosions at nuclear plants, hundreds of thousands have been evacuated
in the aftermath of the incident, whose death toll is expected to exceed 20,000 persons.
in the wake of the disaster, it is up to the rest of the world to help japan.
give what you can, and spread the word to help others do the same.

.

get into gear!
designboom is hosting 'RENAULT 4ever',
a new design competition asking individuals to reconsider the classic
RENAULT 4 in contemporary terms.
a functional aesthetic and minimalist look characterized the historic model,
whose design and technical engineering translated into low running costs and
easy adaptability to a range of models. how will you bring aesthetic appeal
and technical sustainability to the new RENAULT?

RENAULT 4 EVER

hands door handles

participants are asked to re-design the renault 4.
the briefing is broken up in 2 main parts:

1- the look and its style:
the RENAULT 4 has been the third bestselling model in automobile history and
has become an international pop style icon. your new design project should
respect the identity of the historical R4 model, which was based on an extremely
functional and minimalistic philosophy.

the RENAULT 4, first presented in 1961, was an industrial mass-production model.
its innovative, low-cost but effective solutions embraced the entire population.
not only in france, or europe, but worldwide, as it transcended social boundaries.
before ceasing production in 1994, the R4 reached a total distribution of 8,135,424 cars
in more than 100 countries. like denim jeans which are worn the world over by all classes,
its creator and former president of renault, pierre dreyfus launched the renault 4
as 'the blue jeans car'.
people of all nations expressed feelings of sympathy to the changes in society
of the sixties, which had been catalyzed in the peace movements, and the R4 was
a favorite means of transport for those young people itching to explore the world.

this year, the R4 turns 50. this competition aims to revive the R4's spirit
therefore, somehow your re-design should resemble the look of the
historic model and most importantly: it should look great.

2- innovative design and technology for sustainable mobility:
the cleverly minimalistic R4 used the technical know-how of its time at its best.
low running costs and the ability to adapt to all types of use granted the R4 an
illustrious 31-year career. the revolutionary approach to body design allowed
several different versions, including a van, a four-wheel drive vehicle and
a cabriolet. the sturdy construction and the low maintenance strategy of the model
made it suitable also for an off-road racing championship.
how would you translate this characteristics into a contemporary model?

like its illustrious predecessor, the new generation Renault 4-ever will be a
people-centered vehicle. drawing from the heritage of the iconic original '4L', it will be a simple,
practical, reliable and affordable car offering mobility for all. crucially, as a 21st century vehicle,
it will be designed with the future in mind and according to the principles of the circular economy,
aiming at achieving a positive impact on the environment rather than simply focusing
on being slightly 'less bad'.

HANDS ON DOOR HANDLES

hands door handles

COLOMBO DESIGN, a leading italian manufacturer of handles and accessories for doors and windows,
is dedicated to a discerning quality of design that combines technological innovation with
excellence in industrial manufacturing procedures, adopting only eco-compatible processes
in every stage of production. the COLOMBO DESIGN state-of-the-art product catalogue features door handle
projects created by protagonists of today's international design scene, among them
carlo bartoli, jean marie massaud, jasper morrison, michele de lucchi, alberto meda and konstantin grcic.
with this competition, COLOMBO DESIGN aims to expand the horizons of door handles.

the door handle is an exciting medium
in the field of internal door and window furniture the path between innovation and what is
considered repetition or re-design of 'classical' forms is narrow. if it is true that through the
years the most successful models have been variations on basic forms, it is also true that
door handles are an exciting medium for contemporary forms. along the qualitative line
of their long formal (sculptural) tradition, door handles have always expressed and matched
the changing lifestyle choices of society. this competition is a difficult aesthetic and technical
challenge to stimulate design innovation with much attention to detail.

for everyday use, and not for gadget display
we are not looking for excessive-aggressive styling or new radical high tech solutions.
please refrain from all those overworked concepts of randomly including interactive technologies
to encourage behavioral transformation. door handle designs with incorporated LED lights,
the latest cool audio or video gadgets, cell phones etc. will not be considered as relevant.
this is an opportunity of developing a real product, a simple, but important functional object.
the scope of the co-organizing company COLOMBO DESIGN is to manufacture the best door handles
of this competition.

the basics of door lever handle hardware
sweeping forms are great, a sleek and shiny appearance too, but please also consider that
indoor handles use commonly marketed mechanical parts, which are conforming to the
relevant building and safety standards. the actual sizes of the levers vary, but convenient
measurements have been widely adopted and hardware manufacturers make their products
to fit these standards. the bore hole size, cross bore size and the thickness of the doors are
to be considered, (in the case of non-standard door thicknesses, customized pins are available).
most door handle levers are mounted on a round rose, however new designs may include square,
oval and other shapes of roses. other important factors are robustness, the thickness of the
rose plates, smooth or angular finished edges (for purposes of visual accentuation), …
last but not least, the handle set itself (as a door has two sides, a door requires two handles
- a left and a right version).

free-style
experimental projects are very welcome and considered appropriate if they match the few technical
requirements cited. in this case, a pragmatic design approach of 'making do' to verify the quality
of your door handle design through mock-ups or prototypes is very appreciated.
