March
30 – April 13 Deadline for
submissions March 25
How
are the dynamic changes taking place across the Middle East
affecting the creativity of young Egyptians? And how is social
media influencing contemporary forms of history-making and
storytelling? More importantly, how is all of this affecting you?
To explore these questions, we are pleased to invite anyone
interested in film, documentary, and/or storytelling to apply to
participate in a workshop and project series at the Townhouse
Gallery.
In
the workshop, participants will receive instruction on how to film
their own video self-portraits. Participants will discuss and
explore different forms of video-based storytelling, considering
both innovative, technology-driven trends in communication and the
timeless notion of the artist’s self-portrait. The videos will
then be collected, edited, and produced by the workshop leader,
Corinne van Egeraat. The workshop will be conducted in English.
Project
details: The self-portrait project has two
parts:
1.)
The
first workshop consisting of six sessions will include 20
participants. Workshop leaders will provide technical instruction
in the use of video equipment, filming techniques, and strategies
for building a narrative. The group will discuss potential themes
for their video diaries, such as transformations in their personal
lives, in their creative processes and in the public sphere.
During this first workshop, all participants will make short
self-portraits. Any format and any type of camera are allowed
(including films made with mobile phones, animations, etc.). Based
on these short videos, 10 filmmakers will be short listed to
participate in the next workshop beginning in the weeks following
the end of the first workshop.
2.)
The 10
shortlisted filmmakers will work together, and individually with
the workshop leader, to continue producing video diaries over a
period of several months. They will each make a personal
contribution to one larger, collaborative narrative. These
participants will also be given a small video camera and a small
fee for their expenses.
When
and Where: The first workshop will begin on
March 30th. Over the following 2 weeks, there will be
six workshop sessions (Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Mondays) in the
Townhouse Library, from 6 – 9 p.m.
A
presentation of the films will be held on April 13th.
Those
participating in the second part of the workshop will also have
the opportunity to have their short films and other contributed
works exhibited at Townhouse, and at galleries and festivals
abroad. The workshop leader will ultimately choose one film to be
edited by the producer for TV and cinema.
Who
Can Apply, and How: Anyone interested in
film, documentary, and/or storytelling is encouraged to apply. We
are interested in participants from diverse backgrounds. You must
be willing and able to point the camera at yourself and be the
subject of your story, and you should have access to your own
video camera (this can be of any kind, including a mobile phone)
and computer. Basic editing experience is a plus.
To
apply please email your CV, a short statement of motivation, and
one artwork, photograph or video that you have taken that you’re
proud of. The statement of motivation can be written (one page in
length), or be in the form of a short 30 second film. Please email
materials to Corinne@zindoc.nl
by March 25 with “Self Portrait Video Project” in the subject
line. **Please note: all video
materials should be sent via www.wetransfer.com
to Corinne@zindoc.nl
