SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Major Acquisition Enhances OKCMOA Collection
Donation of Important Piece of American Furniture
The Oklahoma City Museum of Art has acquired an important piece of eighteenth-century American furniture, a Chippendale Blocked and Figured Mahogany Chest-on-Chest (1780-1800) attributed to Benjamin Frothingham. The chest-on-chest was donated by Martha Vose Williams in loving memory of her husband, Dr. G. Rainey Williams, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Alden Vose, and her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Alden Vose, from whom the chest was inherited. Chest-on-Chest will be on view on the second floor.
"This acquisition is a fine and rare example of early American furniture that will enhance our American art collection," said Glen Gentele, president and CEO.
Benjamin Frothingham (American, 1734-1809) was a renowned cabinetmaker in Charlestown, Massachusetts, whose career spanned fifty years. The son of a Boston craftsman, Frothingham set up a shop in Charlestown in 1756. He served in the American War of Independence, attaining the rank of major of artillery. Frothingham resumed his career as a cabinetmaker after the war and continued working throughout the remainder of the century. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and was visited by President George Washington in 1789. Frothingham was part of a large family that produced sixteen woodworkers in the course of four generations in Boston and Charlestown.
The chest-on-chest, consisting of two stacked chest of drawers, was a type of furnishing common in England and America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Made of imported mahogany, the chest has a distinct Chippendale style, incorporating characteristics of Rococo, Chinese, and Gothic elements along with Georgian classical forms. This style was introduced to America from England during the Colonial Era and flourished during the 1770s.
Examples of Benjamin Frothingham's furniture reside in many private collections as well as public collections, including the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and Historic Deerfield.

TOUR de QUARTZ Opening Thursday through April 24, 2011
Tour de Quartz is a selection of artwork created by students from across the state during their two-week residency at Quartz Mountain. The paintings, rendered in acrylic, include self-portraits, still lifes, and abstract work. The self-portraits range from realistic to an abstract, faceless work, and the still lifes portray unusual subject matter, such as tennis shoes and cameras. The photography students created one cohesive work titled Ten Days In Greer County: a photo exploration of the people and spirit of Greer County, Oklahoma. Some poignant, some playful, the color portraits capture firefighters, cowboys, rodeo clowns, children, seniors, and more.
