CONSTITUTING RELATIONS TO PLACE: Considering Nomadic Traditions in Relation to Contemporary Urban Mobility and Practice

Thursday 7 April, 6.30 – 8.30pm

Guest speakers Fernando Garcia Dory (artist), Laura Marziale (Migrant Resource Centre) and Pooya Ghoddousi (architect and researcher) will join an open discussion chaired by Emma Smith (Artist) to explore notions of belonging, relation to place and the connotations of time, within global and local contexts and practices.

This event is part of PUBLIC RELATIONS: a series of talks and discussions curated by Artist Fellow Emma Smith as part of The Showroom’s Communal Knowledge participation programme.

Fernando García-Dory is a neo-pastoralist artist whose work engages with issues affecting the relationship between contemporary culture and nature including desires and expectations related with identity, crisis, utopy, mobility and social change. Fernando is Trustee of the World Alliance of Mobile Indigenous Peoples (WAMIP), Co-ordinator of the Spanish Federation of Shepherds and Director of The Shepherds School of Northern Spain. He is currently preparing a PhD on Agro-ecology and a Cultural Strategy for the Pastoralist Movement.

Laura Marziale is Community Education Team Co-ordinator for the Migrant Resource Centre. The MRC works with migrants and refugees and in partnership with other agencies to effect social justice and change, enabling migrants and refugees to fully participate in UK society. MRC provide advice, training, opportunities, education, social and childcare provision for displaced people from around the world, initiating and participating in campaigns, networks and partnerships to improve the lives of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees.

Pooya Ghoddousi is an architect and researcher who’s work seeks to establish nomadism as a trans-historical concept and valid way of life in a globalizing world.

He has worked as architect, designer and consultant and for CENESTA, an NGO based in Iran working with Qashqai Nomads on Sustainable Livelihoods. Pooya is currently undertaking a PhD at UCL (University College London) that explores the concept of nomadism in specific relation to the South-North transnational mobility of middling Iranians, linked to which, he is also working on a documentary film in collaboration with Farshid Behzad and Sohrab Daryabandari.
