Carlos Bar at Santa Anita Park

Friday, April 8, 2011 from 6:00pm-8:00pm

Santa Anita Park
285 W. Huntington Drive
Arcadia, CA 91007

UPDATE: There has been a slight change in the gathering place for the April 8, 2011 Cocktails in Historic Places at Santa Anita. We will gather in Carlos Bar (via the Club House entrance) and not the Frontrunner Bar as previously stated.

If you’re curious about Santa Anita behind–the–scenes, Ms. Elizabeth Booth, a special events coordinator for Santa Anita, will lead a brief tour at 7:00 pm.

Make a day of it, and take advantage of the park's Free Friday. Come for the races (post time is 1 pm), pose for a photo with the statue of Seabiscuit, dine at the FrontRunner Restaurant, and then stay for cocktails (the perfect way to celebrate your winnings!)

Come straight from work or slip into something more Deco—either way, plan to join us! Cocktails in Historic Places is open to members and non-members alike.

DIRECTIONS: Santa Anita Park is located in Arcadia, California, 14 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The racetrack property is bounded by Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive and is adjacent to the Westfield Santa Anita Shopping Center. Major freeways giving access to Santa Anita are the Foothill Freeway (I-210) to the north, San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) to the south, the San Gabriel River (I-605) to the east and the Pasadena (110) and Glendale (2) Freeways on the west.

PARKING: Please enter through Gate 5 off Huntington Drive (just west of Santa Anita). There will be a few signs that read "Art Deco Society" directing you to the Club House entrance, and to Carlos’ Bar. FREE parking.

QM_photo Flappers & Funnies Lecture

Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

Egyptian Theatre
6712 Hollywood Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90028

Co-presented by the American Cinematique: Funnies & Flappers. Everyone is familiar with the image of the flapper - the modern, carefree woman who embodied the spirit of the Jazz Age. Films, literature and music all used the flapper as an artistic device. But there was another medium in which sociopolitical commentary about the flapper was present: comics. Come explore the role of the flapper in the funny papers in this illustrated lecture, presented by historian and historic preservation consultant Mitzi March Mogul.

Then, at 3:00PM: SHOW GIRL IN HOLLYWOOD, 1930, Warner Bros., 80 min. Dir. Mervyn LeRoy. Alice White stars as "Dizzy" Dixie, a Broadway understudy who is lured out to Hollywood when a smooth-talking director promises her fame and fortune. But when Dixie, against the odds of the crummy empty promise that brought her to Hollywood, actually starts to get starring roles in the movies, her ego soars along with her paycheck. Featuring brilliant Technicolor musical sequences! With cameos by Al Jolson and Loretta Young. Preceded by a "Betty Boop" short.

Advance tickets available via Fandango. ADSLA and Cinematheque members are $7.00, non-members $11.00.

QM_photo Attend the 7th Annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival for FREE
