NEW EXHIBIT OPENS APRIL 14th

ANOTHER MUSEUM QUILT INSPIRES DESIGNERS

May-June 2011 Issue
QUILTMAKER MAGAZINE
RE-DRAWS A MUSEUM CLASSIC

The latest issue of Quiltmaker magazine features a pattern for a 19th century quilt from the permanent collection of the New England Quilt Museum. In addition, the magazine offers an updated version of this wonderful classic.

Made by an anonymous Pennsylvania quilter, the 1870s Museum quilt follows an American design that dates from the 1700s. Forty-one baskets are set on the diagonal and separated by madder stripe sashing. Other fabrics in a soft array of pink, madder and earth tones, colors popular in the latter half of the 19th century, also went into this historic quilt.

Quiltmaker's pattern for the classic version of the Museum basket quilt draws heavily on the design and color palate of the original. The airy updated version, by contrast, features baskets in bright spring colors arrayed on a pure white background.

Earlier this year, Marcus Fabrics announced an entire new line of fabrics inspired by other quilts in the permanent collection of the New England Quilt Museum. The eighteen fabrics in the Bancroft Collection are available at the Museum Gift Shop as yardage and as a fat quarter sampler pack of the full line.

Coming in mid-April to the Museum: a special exhibit of antique and modern quilts made with an unusual technique that originated in New England in the mid-1800s.

Blocks in these quilts are individually layered, quilted and finish-bound before being whip-stitched together. During the Civil War, many women's sewing circles used the technique to make quilts for wounded soldiers. Three of these Civil War quilts will be featured in the ONE FOOT SQUARE exhibit.

Join us for the official Opening Reception for ONE FOOT SQUARE and a lecture by Guest Curator Pam Weeks on Saturday, April 16th at 1 pm. A number of other special events are planned in conjunction with this exhibit. Visit the Museum website for more info: www.nequiltmuseum.org.
