DANCE
Dance workshops @ Harry Margolis Hall (15–20 April)
Pascal Hulin and Melanie Oster (both well-known accomplished dancers from Europe) will be in Harare in the second half of April 2011 (school holidays). Pascal will conduct workshops in tap, and Melanie will conduct workshops in jazz and hip-hop.
Beginners and Experienced Dancers of all ages are welcome

16th Masdanza Contemporary Dance Festival (Spain)
Movimiento África is a programme that began with the conclusion of the 1st Africa-Spain meeting of Choreographers held in La Gomera (Canary Islands) in January 2010, to establish contacts between professionals in this art form in order to launch a series of creative residences for African artists in Spanish choreographic centres, in addition to promoting visibility for African contemporary dance in our country.
In this regard, and to celebrate the 16th Masdanza Contemporary Dance Festival of the Canary Islands, which will take place from 15 to 22 October, an international call has been opened for dancers from all over the world to submit their choreographies and to compete for participation.
The emergent African artists selected to participate in this festival, will have the opportunity to take part in the 2nd Africa-Spain Choreographer's Meeting which will be held from 8 to 12 October in Mercat des Flors (Barcelona).

MUSIC
Concert @ Chisipite Senior School (5 April)
Chisipite Senior School are giving a concert on Tuesday 5th April at 6.0 p.m. in the Chapel.
The concert features the choirs, orchestras, ensembles and marimba bands which performed at the recent Eisteddfod. The school was awarded 24 Honours and numerous first pluses. The choirs and orchestra received straight Honours.
Entrance will be a donation at the door for the music department and tea will be served. There is guarded parking in the grounds.
Everyone is welcome to come and listen to the girls singing and playing their 2011 Eisteddfod groups programme.

Reps Theatre main stage: Jonathan Larson's award-winning musical Rent, one of the most acclaimed stage and screen musicals of the past 20 years, in its debut performance in Zimbabwe. Directed by Zane E Lucas and starring Josh Ansley, Zoran Zec, Desiree Mostert, Erin Housam, Patrick Barrett, Kirby Chipembere, David Bvumbe and Tina Masawi. Reps main stage from April 6 to 16.

Rent: National Trust of Zimbabwe Gala Performance Fund-raiser (15 April)
Rent is a fast paced, energetic, very moving musical that follows the lives of a group of friends living in Alphabet City in New York and how
they cope with life, love and art all under the shadow of the ever-increasing AIDS problem. The music is fantastic; the young cast is
vibrant and talented; and the director, Zane Lucas, won Afdis awards last year for best direction and best production.
Owing to some of the content, the show is rated PG 16 and we can provide details for any concerned parents, should need be.
This fund-raiser is for La Rochelle - a property left in Trust for the enjoyment of all Zimbabweans and visitors alike, by the Courtaulds. The aim is to restore this gracious property situated in the Imbeza Valley on the Mozambique border - and adjacent botanical garden to its former glory.

Acoustic night auditions @ ZGS (7 April)
The acoustic night is an initiative by Wildfire Events supported by the Zimbabwe German Society to promote artists.
It involves bringing together unknown solo artists of different genres and having them perform live with acoustic backing. This creates an aura of intimacy between the audience and the artist, thus giving the artist a better platform for their art to be appreciated. The Acoustic night is therefore a platform created to expose as many new artists as possible to a diverse audience.
This invitation is open to all interested upcoming artists who feel this platform could help them. Auditions are for free but punctuality is of paramount importance as we look forward to working with serious artists.

Peterhouse Choir, Jazz Band and marimbas (8 April)
Friday 8 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
This choir was started last year in January and comprises members of both Peterhouse Girls and Peterhouse Boys. They have performed at various concerts as well as giving their own at the end of last year when they earned their first standing ovation. The programme includes "Mama Tembu's wedding", Xhosa, Zulu, Shona and Ndebele traditional songs and "Plea for Africa" by J.B. Nokwe and will also feature the jazz band and marimba group.

Ballet Double Bill: Le Corsaire and The Dream (15 April)
Friday in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.- with supper interval.
The Corsair is a colourful extravaganza with a preposterous plot, magnificent scenic effects and dramatic choreography. It is one of Petipa's less known but most exotic ballets and contains some of his most spectacular choreography, done full justice in this recording from the Kirov Ballet made in 1989. The Dream, by contrast, is one of Sir Frederick Ashton's best-loved ballets, created for the Shakespeare quatercentenary in 1964 and shown here in a production by the American Ballet Theatre with Alexandra Ferri as Titania.

Bulawayo Chamber Music Society (16 April)
Saturday 16 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.00 p.m.
The concert will include the following works for piano trio played by Donald Walsh (violin), Cynthia Pretorius (cello) and Deon Marcus (piano): Haydn: Trio in E flat major; Reinecke: Trio in E major; arr.Cynthia Pretorius: Celtic Suite. There will also be some vocal music including Handel's Ombra ma fui (better known as "Handel's Largo"), Stranger in Paradise, Jealousy, Cinema Paradiso, Panis Angelicus and a medley of Italian Songs when the singers will be Pieter Cloete and Graham Bishop.

The Dream of Gerontius (20 April)
Wednesday 20 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Elgar's great work was presented in St.Paul's Cathedral in November 1997 as part of the celebrations of the BBC's 75th and the Cathedral's 300th anniversaries . Andrew Davis conducts an inspired performance with Catherine Wyn Rogers, Philip Langridge, Alastair Miles and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Thursday 21 April in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30 p.m.
Anthony Quinn stars in Barabbas, the fictional story of the man released by the people of Jerusalem in preference to Jesus. "A lavish production coupled with a good script (based on Per Langerkvist's novel) and generally fine acting by the large cast make for an engrossing, literate experience" (Leonard Maltin's 2011 Movie Guide).

Zimages Exhibition @ ZGS (5 April)
The Zimbabwe German Society presents a two man exhibition of paintings, drawings and graphics by emerging visual artists Richard Mudariki and Mukudzei Muzondo. Richard paints exciting works of art that are not only aesthetically appealing but that also catch the attention of the viewer. Mukudzei works with various and exciting techniques in an expressive manner. He explores various media and themes.
The exhibition will be a visual representation of each artist's reflections of Zimbabwe's past, present and hopes of the future. The artworks presented in this exhibition mirrors the society that the artists live in, reflecting through visual images, its aspirations, concerns, fears and hopes. An engagement and exploration of a variety of media and techniques in present in the artworks in this show. Artists are free to communicate their visions, dreams and interpretations. In their work, they overcome fear of ridicule and can be daring and foolish.

Zimbabwean floral artists and a floral-art judge will be participating in the World Association of Floral Artists' Competition in Boston, USA, in June 2011. This competition is the "world cup" of Floral Art and is held in a different country once every four years. On the occasions when Zimbabweans have managed to get to where the competition has been held, they have been awarded several prizes - even the "Best on Show", which is an amazing achievement considering that people from all over the world enter and that there are usually well over 400 arrangements.

National Gallery of Zimbabwe: Call to Women Artists (deadline 2 May)
Beauty of Creation presented at Courteney Hotel
The National Gallery of Zimbabwe in collaboration with Courteney Hotel are calling on all female artists in Zimbabwe to participate in an exhibition for women and by women. Interested individuals should create paintings of their choice guided by the theme Beauty of Creation, particularly looking at the environment. This show serves to recognize the artistic talent in Zimbabwe and women are being offered an opportunity to creatively express themselves through painting.
Criteria: All works submitted will go under selection by a jury and 50 selected works will be exhibited at Courteney Hotel from 27 May to 27 June 2011.
Awards: There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes winners.
The deadline for submission is Monday 2 May 2011 at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

Pikicha Photography Competition (monthly – next closing date, 20 April)
The Zimbo Jam, in partnership with The Spanish Embassy in Harare, are running a photographic competition with a grand prize of US$1000. Professional and amateur Zimbabwean photographers are invited to enter.
The competition has monthly themes and monthly prizes and runs until June 2011.
Each month will have three prizes of $100, $50 and $25 for the top three winners.
An overall winner for the 2011 competition will be chosen after the six months and will receive a cash prize of US $1000.
Submissions must be made by the 20th of each month.
The themes are:
April: "Keep it Green"
May: "Albinos"
June: "Women by Women" (Women of Zimbabwe captured by other women)

Book reading: Shimmer Chinodya (English and German) @ ZGS (14 April)
Shimmer Chinodya's novel, Strife, winner of the Noma Award, has recently been published in Germany, entitled, Zwietracht. What gives a novel its appeal in a different continent in another language?
Its shared humanity, through the depth of its characterisation; the fascination of its plot? contemporary themes that address concerns shared worldwide? or its exoticism? These are among the few questions that Franzi Kramer a young German scholar will address when she introduces Strife, and analyses its appeal for a German audience, following which she and Shimmer Chinodya will read passages from both books in German and in English.
Come and join us for some wine and snacks and a lively discussion about cross-cultural fiction in 2011.

The workshop is designed to offer a highly enjoyable outlet for children's creativity.
Kids get a chance to shine in front of the camera, in the four categories - dancing, singing, acting and photo modelling
All they need to bring is lots of imagination, a free spirit, comfy shoes and a pack snack. The rest is up to the KIFOC team
Singing with the well-known jazz singer Dudu Manhenga has become a huge hit with the kids. Dressing up with Rahim Solomon, the acting coach, is great fun too.
Hats, costumes and props GALORE are used to transform kids into many different characters and fulfil their fantasies in front of the camera.

The 52nd annual general meeting of the society will be held on Thursday 7 April, at the Dandaro bridge room, Dandaro Village, Harare, at 17.45

Zimbabwe German Society: A Peace of Art: Pre-selection (11 April); The Show (13 April)
In this creative art competition, the ZGS is calling out to every young and upcoming artist to participate expressing their experiences and involvement with peace through any Medium (drawing, dancing, singing, poetry, sculpture, etc.). All artists are invited to hand in their artwork on the 11th April for the pre-selection by our jury at the ZGS.
Please register no later than 9am!! This pre-selection is going to be a full day event, where 10 artists will be selected for the final round on the 13th April.
The final 10 artists stand a chance to win $300 for the first place, $200 for the second- and $100 for the third place. If you want to participate and would require any equipment (sound system, screens, projector etc.), please let us know before the 5th of April.

Association of Complementary Health Practitioners (12 April)
Our monthly gathering at Highlands Sports Club will be on Tuesday, 12 April, at 6.00 pm for 6.30 pm.
Please note earlier start to accommodate the AGM, which we ask everyone to attend as we are introducing a revised constitution.
We need your support everyone. Please be there.
Our speaker will be Dell Smith, a well-known and well-loved natural therapist who has treated thousands of people over the 40 years in which she has practised in Harare. Dell works as a homeopath, and uses a variety of therapies, although she modestly sums up her work in the following few words;
"I qualified as a Naturopath in 1969 through the Naturopathic College of South Africa, which is no longer in existence. I was taught to work with the pendulum by Sister Marie Naude, a Naturopath from Cape Town, and learnt to use a radionic instrument for diagnosis. I worked and studied with Dr. Andrew Cox, a Homoeopath and Osteopath in Harare,for two and a half years before he left in March 1971. He referred many of his patients to me and I started practising in a small way at that time. My talk, after the AGMm will be about the many memorable moments which have occurred during my forty years of practice."
Everyone will find Dell's talk of interest and value, and most of us have been to her as patients, so come and hear some of her memories and stories.
After the talk we will have a "Bring and Share Supper", and we ask that everyone who attends will bring a plate of snacks towards the meal, or a pudding or salad. It is a pleasant evening, and the bar will be open for drinks. A small donation is requested at the door to cover our costs of hall hire and the help of the kitchen staff. Everyone is welcome, and new members invited to join, and we always welcome new therapists.

For this day we invite you to come and invent and create games with us. You can come to play all types of language games and enjoy being with people who are interested in German(y) and students from different levels.
