The Downtown Dinner 2011

The Downtown Dinner, LMCC's annual benefit celebrating arts and culture Downtown, has become one of the most anticipated social events of the season, bringing together an eclectic mix of over 600 business executives, political leaders, and major figures in the art world. Each year at the Dinner, LMCC presents its Liberty Award to recognize extraordinary leaders for their contributions to Downtown. This year, we are thrilled to celebrate Kenneth I. Chenault and American Express for all they have done to make Lower Manhattan a thriving center of art, business, and tourism. We are also delighted to honor The Joyce Theater, a longtime ally of LMCC that shares our purpose of supporting artists and promoting the arts. Joining us to celebrate our honorees will be Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Award-winning actor Bill Irwin, performance artist Laurie Anderson, musicians Joshua Bell and Branford Marsalis, dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones, and visual artist Tom Otterness.

The Downtown Dinner not only gives us the opportunity to recognize those who promote and support culture in Lower Manhattan, it is also our most significant fundraising tool. Table prices start at $10,000 and tickets at $1,000, and there are numerous recognition opportunities, as described on the Reservation Form. Even if you cannot attend, your contribution will go directly towards our efforts to “make art happen” in every corner of Downtown.

To purchase tickets/tables, please complete the Reservation Form and mail it with payment to Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, 125 Maiden Lane, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10038. For more information or to make your reservation by phone or email, please contact Maureen McMahon at 212.219.9401 x101 or mmcmahon@lmcc.net.

Swing Space Performing Arts Groups Present Projects in Development in The Vaults at 14 Wall Street

Talibam! Goes to Bed with Sam Kulik and Discovers Atlantis

Join us for a theatrical musical performance by Swing Space grantee Talibam! with co collaborator Sam Kulik about a boy named Franklin (voiced by drummer Kevin Shea) who gets brought to the bottom of Atlantis in order to save it from a dangerous toxic oil spill. Talibam! and Kulik tell a story that uniquely weaves current events, comedy, Hollywood plot lines, and contemporary music. At times the album resembles a radio play, at times opera, and often the trio lets the music make a statement of its own and drops the narrative to let loose some serious freewheeling instrumental jams and tuneful songs. Talibam! and Kulik play nearly a dozen undersea characters and as many instruments. The underwater world that Shea, Mottel, and Kulik create is fascinating and new, yet eerily similar to our own.

Free and open to the public. RSVP is required.

Date & Time:

Friday, April 1, 8PM
Saturday, April 2, 9PM
Sunday, April 3, 7PM

Sinking Ship Productions Presents a Workshop Showing of Flatland

On the last night before the new Millennium, A. Square, an inhabitant of Flatland, is visited by a Sphere from the land of three dimensions. Sphere takes him on a journey to discover the true nature of the universe. But in Flatland, the notion of a third dimension is heresy, and one who preaches such heresy must be silenced...

The play interweaves an adaptation of Edwin A. Abbott's 1884 satirical and prescient novella with an exploration of contemporary physics theories involving extra dimensions of space.

Using puppetry, object manipulation, physical theater, and a range of technology from overhead projectors to lasers, Flatland tells the story of humanity's search to comprehend the world beyond what we see and experience.

Presented in association with the Ensemble Studio Theater.

Free and open to the public. RSVP here.

Dates and Times:

Thursday, April 14, 3PM
Friday, April 15, 7PM

Location:

The Vaults at 14 Wall Street

In this interactive workshop, two veteran teaching artists address these essential questions as well as provide practical steps, approaches, and strategies to developing a teaching art practice. Through interactive dialogue, role-play and discussion of best practices in resume writing, lesson planning and classroom management, participants will be armed with the essential tools and information they need to enter the field.
