Lucy Pullen: The Cloud Chamber and Related Works

East Gallery
March 5, 2011 - June 26, 2011

Lucy Pullen situates her work in the unexpected terrain opened up when the disciplines of visual art, philosophy, and physical science meet. Working with engineers and astrophysicists, Pullen created two new sculptures to act as detectors that present cosmic rays as they pass through our earthly environments. Each geometrically specific chamber contains a distinct atmospheric condition. When a cosmic ray passes through The Cloud Chamber a contrail is formed. When a cosmic ray passes through The Spark Chamber

Exhibited alongside the chambers are drawings and paintings of landscapes, in which the intentionally limited palette emphasizes light and shadow to create form. The juxtaposition allows Pullen to "make analogies" as she says between 'dark' matter and a shadow, aesthetic and quantum events, and a cosmic and an aesthetic mark. READ MORE

Shadows of a Fleeting World: Pictorial Photography and the Seattle Camera Club

North Galleries
February 12, 2011 - May 8, 2011

In the early years of the 20th century a group of talented Japanese immigrants in Seattle took up the practice of pictorial photography. During that time, Japanese-American pictorial photographers were so numerous on the West Coast that they formed large camera clubs, particularly in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. They produced work that was published widely and exhibited in national and international competitions.

Shadows of a Fleeting World presents over 100 works by Seattle Camera Club photographers and others in the Seattle area who worked in the pictorial style during the movement's heyday. READ MORE

Inspiring Vision

Mezzanine
Through June 26, 2011

Inspiring Vision features a selection of photographs that corresponds to a curriculum guide the Henry has developed for K-12 teachers. The art works are accompanied by didactic labels that give suggestions for slowing down the looking process, encouraging the viewer to notice aspects of a photograph that might otherwise be overlooked. The photographs are drawn from the Henry's Joseph and Elaine Monsen collection of photography and have been chosen with the eye of the photographer in mind. Foci include images that have been skillfully composed, caught in "the decisive moment," or layered with interpretative possibility. Featured artists include Garry Winogrand, Harold Eugene Edgerton, Walker Evans, and Arthur Rothstein.

LECTURE

In the Shade of the Sun:
Pictorial Photography on the West Coast

Friday, April 8, 2011
7:00 - 8:00 PM
Henry Auditorium
Henry Members FREE | General Admission $5

At the turn of the 20th century, an international Pictorial photography movement began in opposition to the growing prevalence of snapshot photography. Pictorialists used the language of painting, often focusing on the craft of the medium to emphasize photography's place among the fine arts. Though the Photo-Secession is the most well-known group of pictorialists in the United States, other groups with talented photographers formed throughout the country. These photographers continued to pursue this style until the 1940s, well after the Photo-Secession ended, creating works that challenge stereotyped notions of Pictorial photography. Dennis Reed will examine the unique aspects of West Coast Pictorialism, highlighting the work of the Japanese Americans who were a part of this movement prior to their forced relocation at the onset of WWII.
