Symposium of Goff’s Work Planned
Media Release April 06, 2011

For Immediate Release

Symposium of Goff’s Work Planned

BARTLESVILLE, OK – Since its opening on January 21st, the exhibition, Bruce Goff: A Creative Mind, has sparked a renewed interest in the architectural and artistic work of Bruce Goff.  Price Tower Arts Center will host a public symposium to explore Goff’s architecture, teaching philosophy and enduring legacy through a series of presentations by historians, architects, and museum professionals.  The symposium will be held on Saturday, April 23rd in Meeting Room A of the Bartlesville Public Library.

“Many of those taking part in the forum were contributors to the exhibition’s scholarly catalogue, Bruce Goff: A Creative Mind..  It was published by the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma and Price Tower Arts Center in 2010,” said Scott W. Perkins, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at Price Tower Arts Center.

Bruce Goff in Theory focuses on the new and emerging research surrounding Goff’s career as well as the careers of those who studied with him at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Architecture during his tenure.

“The morning session will include four presentations, each based upon theoretical approaches. Kay L. Johnson, Registrar of Cheekwood in Nashville, Tennessee, and former Registrar at Price Tower Arts Center and manager of its Architecture Study Center, will discuss Creativity and the Organic Architecture of Bruce Goff.  She will explore the architect’s organic theories throughout his career, but most importantly those of the mid-20th Century,” said Perkins.

Sidney K. Robinson, an Associate Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is on the faculty at Taliesin, The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. He will present Wright, Goff, and After.  The discussion will focus on placing Goff’s thinking in comparison with Frank Lloyd Wright’s through three points of comparison: music, waterfalls, and their plans for the Heurtley House site in Oak Park, Illinois.

“We’re also pleased that Mark A. White, PhD, the Eugene B. Adkins Curator at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma will chat about Goff as artist in his presentation ‘Steadily to the Ideal’: The Paintings of Bruce Goff.'  The discussion will include several of the works shown in the exhibition,” noted Perkins.

The Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at Price Tower Arts Center, Scott W. Perkins, will analyze a seldom addressed topic in Goff scholarship, Bruce Goff and the Modern Organic Interior.

Three practitioners will discuss the impact of Bruce Goff on their work and the work of their students and colleagues during the afternoon session. The panel, Bruce Goff in Practice, will include Music―Architecture―Animation by Brian Eyerman, President and Cofounder of Skyline Ink Animation Studios in Oklahoma City, and the firm that brought 12 of Bruce Goff’s projects from paper to cinematic three-dimensional animation. Hans E. Butzer, Mabrey Presidential Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Oklahoma, will present Seeds for a Pod on the technology used to recreate Goff’s work for the exhibition and the role of the Bruce Goff architecture seminar within the College of Architecture’s curricula.  And, the final presenter will be Christina Hoehn, the Assistant Professor of Interior Design at the University of Oklahoma.  She will explore Goff’s teaching methods in Bruce Goff: Contributions to the Legacy of the OU College of Architecture.

The symposium is free of charge and open to the public. It will be held in Meeting Room A of the Bartlesville Public Library, 600 Johnstone Avenue in Bartlesville.  There will be a lunch break between the two sessions: Bruce Goff in Theory from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and Bruce Goff in Practice from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The exhibition Bruce Goff: A Creative Mind will be on view at Price Tower Arts Center from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. that day, with free admission for symposium attendees. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Price Tower Arts Center at 918.336.4949 or visit www.pricetower.org.
