One of the most fascinating things about the history of fashion in Los Angeles is how, through cinema, the City influenced fashion around the World. Yet most of the costume designers working prior to the 1980s are not household names.
David Galvin and Mary Jo Matsumoto will discuss how these Los Angeles designers shaped American fashion culture; iconic images like Marilyn Monroe in Jax slacks, or her famous Jean Louis "Happy Birthday Mr. President" dress. The issue of the wear-ability of vintage pieces, and the influence these timeless pieces have on modern couture will also be discussed.
David Galvin, a dealer of vintage clothing for over two decades, has been collecting since he was a teenager. He has operated two vintage clothing stores in Los Angeles, and has many wonderful stories about the collectors he has worked with, including many well-known actresses of our time.
Mary Jo Matsumoto designs luxury products, which include handbags, fine jewelry, and couture separates, dresses, and gowns. Her designs have been worn by many celebrities. She has just launched her first Women's Couture collection, as well as a limited Artist Editions collection of cocktail dresses. |
