Almost Alice and Teapots Exhibitions Create Woodson Wonderland

Wausau, Wisconsin: A surreal reimagining of Alice's adventures in Wonderland
and teapots fit for the Mad Hatter's quirky tea party are featured at the
Woodson Art Museum in two new exhibitions that open Saturday, April 9, and
remain on view through June 19, 2011.
Richly layered, haunting digital images in "Almost Alice: New
Illustrations of Wonderland by Maggie Taylor," usher the viewer on a
fantastical excursion down the rabbit hole. An accomplished and innovative
master of digital photography, Taylor offers a mysterious portrayal of Alice
and the puzzling characters she encounters in Lewis Carroll's classic tale,
"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Using sources based in reality - scans of
china figurines and nineteenth-century daguerreotypes - Taylor constructs
colorful, dreamlike narratives. Employing various Photoshop montage
techniques, Taylor manipulates and combines scans, often taking weeks to
produce as many as sixty layers to yield each enigmatic image. Her digital
transformations unleash the power of Carroll's story through luminous
portrayals that demonstrate the unlimited possibilities of art created in new
media formats.
"Almost Alice," organized by the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art,
University of Florida, Gainesville, is toured by Curatorial Assistance,
Pasadena, California.
In Carroll's irreverent story, the harried White Rabbit and the Mad
Hatter turn tea-time etiquette on its head. Teapots fit for this topsy-turvy
world take center stage in "Mad About Teapots: From the Racine Art Museum." A
collection of two dozen teapots brimming with whimsy and delightful absurdity,
selected by the Woodson Art Museum from the Racine museum's extensive
holdings, captures the surprise inherent in Carroll's wonky world. Chosen from
Racine's Donna Moog Teapot Collection, "Mad About Teapots" includes vessels
fashioned into refreshingly unexpected forms - bellhop, inverted giraffe,
pileated woodpecker, and persimmon.
Donna Moog, who assembled her collection of more than 250 teapots during
the 1980s and 1990s, said that "to a ceramic artist, the teapot is more than a
vessel: it has an almost mythical presence and is considered by many artists
to be the consummate test of a potter's skill." The fanciful forms and shapes
suggest the zaniness of teatime in Wonderland and provide an enchanting
complement to "Almost Alice."
"Mad About Teapots" is a Woodson Art Museum project organized by curator
of exhibitions Andy McGivern in conjunction with Bruce Pepich, director,
Racine Art Museum, and drawn from its collection.
