Brooklyn Museum's May 7 Target First Saturday Celebrates Brooklyn's Natural Environment

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. Inspired by important works in the Museum's collection, the May 7 event celebrates Brooklyn and its natural environment. Highlights include:

5-7 p.m. Music
Brooklyn-based string band Frankenpine performs songs about nature influenced by bluegrass, gypsy jazz, and rock.

6 p.m. Film
Who Does She Think She Is (Pamela Tanner Boll, 2008, 73 min.). Documentary about five women artists confronting the choice between mothering and working. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

6 p.m. Dance
Company SoGoNo performs three nature-inspired pieces. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:00 p.m.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-on Art
Use natural elements to create a distinctive print. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7 p.m. Curator Talk
Curator Susan Zeller on Tipi: Heritage of the Great Plains. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

7-9 p.m. Photo Booth
Brooklyn-based artist Andy Lin invites visitors to take digital photos of themselves using a two-way mirror and remote trigger.

8 p.m. Young Voices Talk
Student Guides on the natural landscapes in American Identities: A New Look.

8-10 p.m. Dance Party
DJ Evil Dee showcases Brooklyn's many contributions to hip-hop and soul.

9-10 p.m. Book Club
Cathy Erway, author of The Art of Eating In: How I Learned to Stop Spending and Love the Stove (Gotham Publishing, 2010), speaks about her two-year food adventure and passion for sustainable eating and living.

9-10 p.m. Storytelling Slam
Share your favorite tale at an open-mic hosted by storytelling collective The Moth.

10-11 p.m. Late Night in the Galleries
All galleries open.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m.

Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space available and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are subject to change without notice. Museum admission is free after 5 p.m. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $4 from 5 to 11 p.m.

HOB Connection Free Shuttle
Saturday, May 7, 5-10 p.m.
The Heart of Brooklyn (HOB), a partnership of the leading cultural institutions located near Grand Army Plaza in central Brooklyn, operates a free shuttle between Target First Saturdays and places to eat, drink, and shop, to support local merchants in surrounding neighborhoods. At each stop, tour guides can suggest local restaurants, shops and bars and provide maps, discounts, and tips.
