ARS 11 Calls Us to Africa

The ARS 11 exhibition investigates Africa in contemporary art. The themes of
the exhibition are global issues touching each and everyone of us. Kiasma, the
Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki is pleased to invite you to a press
preview of the exhibition on Tuesday, 12 April 2011, at 11 am. Artists and
curators will be present for interviews, and you will have an opportunity to
be the first to see a major international exhibition. ARS 11 will change your
ideas about Africa and contemporary art.

The glue that binds together the ARS 11 artists is their relationship to
Africa. In addition to artists living in Africa, the show also features others
who live outside the continent, artists of African descent as well as Western
artists who address African issues in their work. The exhibition features some
300 works by a total of 30 artists. The Kiasma Theatre also has a programme of
ARS events and performances.

Because they are global, the themes of the exhibition, such as issues of
refugeeism, environmental problems and urban life, touch us.  ARS 11 will
extend the idea of what Africa, contemporary art and African contemporary art
are today.

ARS 11 is the eighth show in the ARS series, and marks the 50th anniversary of
the most important exhibition institution in the Nordic countries. Held since
1961, ARS 11 is a major international art event filling Kiasma with artworks,
performances, screenings, discussions and workshops.
