New York, NY (March 28, 2011)—In partnership with
the Victor J. Papanek Foundation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and
the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the Museum of Arts and Design launches the
Design for the Real World Redux competition and the
Victor J. Papanek's Social Design Award, to be presented to one
outstanding entry on the subject of socially responsible design. Design Indaba
is to be the Competition's media partner.
Named in honor of the renowned Austrian-born,
American-trained designer and educator, whose 1971 book "Design for the Real
World" was one of the first to promote the design of products that were
ecologically and socially responsible—for example, a radio that could be
cheaply assembled from discarded metal cans and powered by a burning
candle—the competition calls for established, emerging, and student
designers to submit work in the conceptual phase, prototype, or production that
upholds Papanek's vision of environmental and/or social
responsibility.
"In his influential book, Victor Papanek put social needs in the foreground of
design by asking practitioners to see their field in a larger context. For him
designers must take responsibility for the impact that their creations can have
on the quality of life of individuals and societies," says David Revere
McFadden, Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design. "This competition
seeks to discover and celebrate creative thinkers whose works are informed by
Papanek's spirit, and who envision design as a way to improve and enrich the
world."
Gerald Bast, the President of the University of Applied
Arts Vienna,
concurs:
"Considering the state of the world, we have to dedicate ourselves to
designing a better future by creating new realities—intellectual as well
as
aesthetic!"

ABOUT THE
SPONSORS
The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD)
explores the blur zone between art, design, and craft today. The Museum focuses
on contemporary creativity and the ways in which artists and designers from
around the world transform materials through processes ranging from the
artisanal to digital. The Museum's exhibition program explores and illuminates
issues and ideas, highlights creativity and craftsmanship, and celebrates the
limitless potential of materials and techniques when used by gifted and
innovative artists. MAD's permanent collection is global in scope and focuses on
art, craft, and design from 1950 to the present day. At the center of the
Museum's mission is education. The Museum's dynamic new facility features
classrooms and studios for master classes, seminars, and workshops for students,
families, and adults. Three open artist studios engage visitors in the creative
processes of artists at work and enhance the exhibition programs. Lectures,
films, performances, and symposia related to the Museum's collection and topical
subjects affecting the world of contemporary art, craft, and design are held in
a renovated 144-seat
auditorium.
The University of Applied Arts Vienna
("Angewandte") offers a wide range of study programs at the undergraduate,
graduate, and doctoral levels, including architecture, design, fine arts, media
arts, transmedia arts, and art conservation-restoration. The "Angewandte" is
home to more than 1,800 students from all over the world. The basic concept of
the university as a place of critical reflection upon personal thought and
action and a forum where questions are more important than given patent
solutions lives on at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The "Angewandte"
sees itself as a place for free artistic and scientific articulation, as a forum
for open discussion, and a development laboratory for artistic visions which
should fulfill their potential and shape the society of the
future.
The Austrian Cultural Forum New York ,
an agency of the Republic of Austria, is located in an extraordinary
architectural landmark building in Manhattan. The Cultural Section of the
Austrian Consulate General in New York, it offers free admission to all of its
events, and frequently engages in cultural gatherings with social, charitable,
and educational context and purpose, in cooperation with Austrian and
Austrian-based artists. It is a cultural, academic, and intellectual meeting
place for Austrians, Americans, and citizens from all over the
world.
Founded in 1995, Design Indaba has since become one of the
world's leading design events. Its Conference has brought together some of the
world's top designers, creatives, thought-leaders, and entrepreneurs to discuss
and demonstrate how creativity can make the world a better place. Since 2004, it
has also produced an annual Expo to promote the products and services of South
African designers to a global market through influential international
buyers.
