ANNOUNCING A NEW EDITION BY JONATHAN MONK

Monk, Jonathan
TWO OF TWO
Edinburgh: Show and Tell Editions, 2011
A 2.5 x 3 x 3cm (approx) wood and rubber stamp consisting of a reproduced
image of the artist's left thumbprint. One of 65 signed and numbered (on a
certificate) examples from the important British conceptual artist Monk.
Referencing Manzoni (who often stamped works with his thumbprint), and,
perhaps indirectly, Warhol with the idea of the unique re-made as a
multiple was never before more apposite as here. In 2003 we published the
other half of this two-part artwork ONE OF TWO (with the stamp being of the
right thumb print) of which we have a few copies left. Fine condition.

95 uk pounds

number of emphemera (including invitation cards) for artists with surnames
beginning with B and C.

ZVUCNI AMBIJENT BELO. SOUND ENVIRONMENT WHITE. SIGNAL Nr 8/9 (January 1973)

photograph of an installation), Lewitt (a reproduced drawing over a letter
from editor, Todorovic) and On Kawara (a reproduced "I am still alive"
telegram) but also concrete poems from Kostelanetz and Blaine and others.
Slightly torn (3cm) along the top outer cover fold line/spine but still an
interesting and scarce document particularly revealing of the work of the
Yugoslavian artists of the time (Group of 6) amongst which Abramovic was a
member before moving west to greater fame.

Ackling, Roger
HELPING HAND
London: Coracle Press, 1980
25.5 x 10.8cm, 24pp plus card covers and dust jacket. Artist's book based
on eight different objects created by the artist out of found wood/bones on
which he etched marks using focussed sun's rays and other indirect methods.
(Each of the eight objects was dedicated to a different person encountered
during Ackling's time on the Scottish Outer Hebridian islands). Ackling
created silkscreens of each object (in up to 40 colours to recreate exactly
the original object) and had the shapes diecut and tipped into each page.
This is one of only 170 signed and numbered copies. Very good apart from a
minor flaw at the top of the spine of the dustjacket. Scarce.

CONTACT POSTCARD FOR SUPPORT SCHOOL (1976)
Coventry: Art & Language, 1976
15 x 10.5cm, 2pp, b/w postcard issued by David Rushton as part of his
"School" magazine project where artists and students were encouraged to
contribute to a magazine mostly devoted to students who wanted to challenge
the typical authoritarian structures of British art schools. This was one
of the very last official A&L projects before the group splintered and A&L
effectively became only synonymous with Baldwin and Mel Ramsden. These
cards were originally only found tipped onto 25 printed posters which
advertised the project of which 15 were sent to various institutions. One
the reverse is a printed contact details and on the front space for
personal contact details to be sent to Rushton. This card is unused and in
mint condition having been at some point removed from the poster. Ref:

THE LAST HURRAH OF THE BELGIUM AVANT GARDE?

(Le Daily Bul)
A COLLECTION OF 47 ISSUES OF POQUETTES VOLANTES (Le Daily Bul) (59 = ALL)
Bruxelles: le Daily Bul, n.d. (1965 - 1979)
47 numbers - a very substantial run from this series (59 = ALL) of artist's
books released by Pol Bury and Balthazar and with strong ties to the
Belgium surrealist group (in many ways one could make a case for the group
around Le Daily Bul to be the heirs to the traditions of Magriette, Nouge
etc: after all Bory and Blathazar both contributed to Les Levres Nues and
other official publications). So close were the group's ties to their
predecessors that several of the surrealist group of Belgium are
represented here with Paul Colinet (3 different books), de Jong, Marcel
Marien and the editors themselves supplying individual projects. Also
included here are important publications by Lourdes Castro and Robert
Filliou (both of which are keenly sought in their own right outside of the
collection) as well as contributions from Rene Bertholo, Koenig, Searle,
Dax and Alchinsky amongst others. The print run was usually 1,000 numbered
copies: individual numbers are sometimes encountered but it is somewhat
difficult to gather large runs albeit incomplete as here. All near fine.

The collection comprises the following discrete volumes:

Vol1: Paul Colinet ,Vilaine et Reseda
Vol 3: Pol Bury, Le petit commencement
Vol 5 : Lourdes Castro, Par Suite
Vol 6 : Catherine Valogne, Dialogues a travers les siècles

Broodthaers, Marcel
COMMENT VA LA MEMOIRE ET LA FONTAINE?
Paris: Yvon Lambert, 1973
64.9 x 43.9cm. colour offset on cream card. Artist's print where
Broodthaers references one of his favourite writers (the author of 'La
Corbeau et la Renard' - the subject of an earlier work by M.B.) as well as
continuing the experiments of Magritte regarding the role of signifier and
signified by reproducing an image of a vintage pistol and an annotated
postcard one above another with added facsimile holographic text by
Broodthaers. The nuance hinted at by the two images together suggests an
answer to the title question (as usual with Broothaers this is a difficult
rebus) - that La Fontaine is dangerous and sentimental at the same time.
One of the monographed and numbered edition of 100 copies. Near fine.

Conceptual Art
NINE "EXHIBITED" ORIGINAL CARDS FROM PROJECT CLASS, NOVA SCOTIA
Halifax: Nova Scotia College of Arts and Design, 1969
Nine different 13 x 18cm, 1pp cards each reproducing a "project submitted
to Projects Class, Nova Scotia College of Arts and Design, Fall 1969".
These cards represent the only extant form of (originally twelve)
conceptual art works ie the works ONLY existed in the form of postcards and
the works described were not realised during this period of exhibition but
rather the cards themselves displayed on the walls were the artworks. The
postcards were then themselves later issued as an artists' book in a
printed envelope (a very rare item in itself). Here we can offer the cards
by Jan Dibbets, Dan Graham, Sol Lewitt, Joseph Kosuth, Douglas Huebler,
Lawrence Weiner, Robert Smithson, Robert Barry and NE Thing and each has a
pin hole top right and some wear in that corner - and the reason for that
damage is because these were the actual cards originally displayed during
the exhibition and given to David Rushton of Art & Language (who was
lecturing at the College at that time despite himself being a student!) and
retained by him. Sadly not complete but a significant find in any case.
Fine apart from the noted pinholes. Unique thus.

ONE OF 450 NUMBERED COPIES

Kawara, On.
I AM STILL ALIVE
Berlin: Rene Block, 1978
21 x 24 cm, 420pp in cloth covered boards. The work consists of
reproductions of Kawara's "I am still alive" telegrams. The existentialism
of the work is obvious. This is one of 450 numbered copies which was the
total first edition. Very good with very minor stains to wrappers. The slip
case (unprinted) has some water damage but this does not detract from the
book at all which is very good and very scarce. Priced to account for
damage to slipcase.

Ono, Yoko
GRAPEFRUIT
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1971
13.5 x 13.5cm, unpaginated (c. 200pp) plus pictorial card covers. Augmented
edition of the original ultra-rare book content of early instruction
paintings - this, the paperback release, has much later material added from
the artist's cinematic pieces and also Lennon interjections. Some creases
to the wrappers including the thick spine. Interestingly, reading the
earlier instruction works which were presumably meant to be conceptual and
event type works one can see how a contemporary proto-hippy audience might
read the works as psychedelic with many references to the sky, rain, the
elements - essentially a misread romanticism. Priced to reflect being just
good+ to almost VG.
