Art Folk is the second time myself (Mo), Mike Funk and Geoff Lindley are showing together. The first, we transformed our watering hole into a gallery space and were thrilled by the support we received from our friends at the Dominion Tavern. Having since joined La Petite Mort Gallery, I wished to share the experience of a gallery show with my kindred art folk. In celebration of our friendship and our need to create, this is our party.
Geoff Lindley’s enchanting however dark and brooding sculptures have become more than the sum of their parts; assembled found objects. As a self taught illustrator he found that he lacked the flare to make his drawings come to 3D life. A labourer used to working with his hands, he turned to sculpture, using traditional model building techniques to convey his ideas. His subject matter is drawn from the realm of horror and science fiction with a dark and engaging sense of humour.
“The usual assortment of tarts”, Mike Funk has said of his subject matter. Of himself he says “Mike Funk was born somewhere, lived somewhere else and will eventually die somewhere.” In the meantime he paints. The bulk of his paintings depict bar scenes through seasoned eyes. There the expected darkness is delivered but with a warmth and intimacy as his characters live out their lives akin to beasts in their natural environment.
Mo (Maureen) McGreavy’s compositions bridge the mediums of painting, sculpture and poetry. The subject matter is drawn from the city and it’s wildlife, an intimate relationship developed over years working as a bike courier and having become an avid birdwatcher. Being told she was an artist since birth she already knew what she would be when she “grew up”; so Mo fell into a job she loved and it has done much to shape her artistic outlook and fuel her love of life.
