From April 20 through June 6, Flux Projects will present Rise Up Atlanta, a community project by artist Charlie Brouwer that will culminate in a temporary sculpture in Freedom Park. The sculpture will be made from ladders borrowed from across the Atlanta community. Each ladder will represent the hopes and dreams of the lenders: individuals, families, businesses, schools, and community groups and organizations.
Each ladder will play an essential part, and bound together they will create a work of art that is metaphor for the aspirations of the whole community. Prominent tags on each ladder will identify its lender, and a list of all lenders will be available on the Flux Projects website. At the end of the project, the ladders will be returned to their owners.
The sculpture will be built on the hill where Freedom Parkway intersects Moreland Avenue. The collection of ladders will begin on April 20, and the structure will be completed for viewing during the Inman Park Festival, April 30 – May 1.
According to executive director Anne Dennington, “We are excited to have a project that will involve such broad community participation. Charlie’s ability to engage people and his experience working in public spaces make him an ideal artist to bring such a project to Freedom Park.”
Brouwer’s goal is to have participation from all 25 Atlanta neighborhoods, and to do this he is enlisting the help of neighborhood associations and other community groups. His hope is to secure 20 ladders from each neighborhood.
Those interested in donating a ladder or serving as a contact for their neighborhood can e-mail Flux Projects at info@fluxprojects.org.
