Meet our Moderator...Natalie Moore...
 
  

NATALIE MOORE, Moderator for the 2011 Conversation: As the reporter for WBEZ’s South Side bureau in Englewood, Natalie covers news and issues in that community and surrounding areas. Natalie is a 2010 recipient of the Studs Terkel Community Media Award. She has won several journalism awards, including a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. Natalie has an M.S.J. in Newspaper Management from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and a B.A. in Journalism from Howard University. She is an adjunct instructor at Columbia College Chicago and is the former program chair for the Association for Women Journalists. Natalie’s work has been published in Essence, Black Enterprise, the Chicago Reporter, In These Times, the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. She is co-author of the book "Deconstructing Tyrone: A New Look at Black Masculinity in the Hip-Hop Generation." (Cleis Press, 2006). She is also co-author of "Almighty Black P Stone Nation: The Rise, Fall and Resurgence of an American Gang." (Feb. 2011, Lawrence Hill Press). Click Here to register for the Conversation…

 

Meet our Key Note...Fred Bates...

 

FREDRICK H. BATES, Keynote for the 2011 Conversation: Recently appointed by State of Illinois Supreme Court  to serve on the Committee for Character & Fitness, Fred also serves as the General Counsel of Henry Booth House, an Illinois not-for-profit social service agency created to assist disadvantaged families in Chicago. In  his private practice, he represents corporations and not-for-profit organizations. Since 1992 he has also served as an Administrative Hearing Officer pursuant to the Illinois School Code for the Chicago Public Schools. He is a Past President of the Cook County Bar Association.  He is also the founder and past Chairperson of the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms.  He was one of the founders of the American Bar Association (ABA) Conference of Minority Partners in Majority-Corporate Law Firms.  In 1988, the ABA selected him as one of 20 outstanding young lawyers in America. In 1999 Creighton University School of Law honored Mr. Bates by bestowing upon him its Judge Elizabeth D. Pittman Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. The Chicago Jaycees named him one of Ten Outstanding Young Citizens in Chicago in 1991. In 1989 the Young Executives in Politics, formed and headed by United States Senator Roland W. Burris, selected Fred as the Young Executive of the Year in Chicago. In 2010 the Rotary Club of Chicago-Far North, presented him with its Paul Harris Fellowship Award.
