BROTHER HAN

Brother HanBrother Han sounds like the music child of Dylan, Jack Johnson and some imaginative rogue MC. Blending the sounds of folk, rock, pop, and a unique style of singing and spoken word storytelling, the talented New York native’s music caters to people from all walks of life. His songs are driven by the good the bad and the ugly and his lyrics are thought-provoking, visual and full of color. With a voice as honest and true as his songwriting, Brother Han is a breath of fresh air and an artist worth discovering.

THE MACHINES PROJECT: GUIDONIAN HAND, ONI BUCHANAN, DUO ORFEO, AND ARTHUR GANSON

MACHINESAriel Artists presents three of its brightest young stars in the contemporary classical world – Guidonian Hand, Oni Buchanan, and Duo Orfeo – together for an evening of slow-burning wonder and painstaking music construction, held together by the delicate workings of Arthur Ganson’s renowned mechanized kinetic sculptures.

As Ganson’s sculptures and films ratchet along through the night on stage, screen and ghostly shadows, a full program of mysterious works from the recent past and brand new compositions of the uncertain present will be performed by this incredible and diverse lineup of musicians.

The New York City trombone quartet Guidonian Hand has made a name for themselves with an inspired attack on all things trombone, from post-modern jungle of Galen Brown to the midnight moods of Thelonious Monk and choral works from Mozart and Debussy. The group has recently commissioned and premiered exciting works that head in all different directions from composers like Galen Brown and Conrad Winslow, with several more new pieces in the works.

POUM TCHACK CINE-CONCERT: DARK SWING

Poum Tchack

Dark Swing: Three animated films by Ladislas Starewitch with live music by POUM TCHACK

Galapagos Art Space is pleased to present “Dark Swing,” a self-described “cine-concert” by French music band Poum Tchack. The cult-favorite, best known for its blend of rock, gypsy, and traditional roots music, will play original, re-invented scores alongside three classic films by Franco-Russian Ladislas Starewitch. The films were produced between 1921 and 1933 and represent Starewitch’s pioneering work in animated cinema, which inspired subsequent notable filmmakers including Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam.

Born near Aix-Marseille almost ten years ago, Poum Tchack offers a fiendish and unclassifiable music. A subtle combination of jazzy-swing with a hint of rock and gypsy. Explosive compositions, omnipresent humour, but above all an infectious enthusiasm and a great quality of interpretation give this band its dimension.

Poum Tchack have more than 500 shows and three album releases under their belt and have been seen on stage with artists including Emir Kusturica, Sergent Garcia, Sanseverino Mickey 3D, Les Ogres de Barback, Manitas de Plata, and Jacques Higelin.

SUNDAY, APRIL 24

AIGA: DESIGNING ACTIVISM

AIGA

Graphic art has always played a role in social movements. But will a movement today look the same as movements of the past? Perhaps the biggest challenge facing this generation is our looming ecological crisis: climate change, waste, depleted resources and growing energy needs. Yet the green movement has a real problem on its hands: How to make a substantive emotional connection and break down ideological divides? Propaganda got a bad rap in the 20th century, but the term was originally neutral. It may be that propaganda is precisely what is needed if we are to mobilize to save the environment as we know it. Can we create a propaganda that is honest, impactive and potentially viral all at once? Using the recent publication of Green Patriot Posters as a starting point, this panel brings together leading voices from both the design world and the green movement to dig into these questions, looking for real answers. Audience input and questions will be solicited.

TUESDAY, APRIL 26
Doors: 6:00 pm, Show: 6:30 pm | $13 AIGA Members, $26 Public

Of one of AME’s recent concerts at Galapagos, the New York Times wrote, “Devoting a program to Minimalist and microtonal compositions could easily amount to an egghead agenda; leave it to the American Modern Ensemble to make it a party instead.”
