Get on board the Laundry Boat and sail through a day of performances, poetry, projections, conversation,
music, meals, libations, and lumiere. Inspired by the "Bateau Lavoir," the bohemian enclave of Paris circa
1911, this daylong program will take place on ICA's terrace. Events begin at noon with brunch and end at
dusk with cinema and snacks. Highlights include:
NOON · Brunch en plein air
12:30 PM · Laundry Boat tales
Art historians and curators converse about the Bateau Lavoir and recount
such storied events as the Rousseau Banquet, held in Picasso's studio, with avant-garde artists,
poets, writers, musicians, and Lolo the donkey.
1:00 PM & 3:00 PM · Où est Sheila?
Tour
ICA's show of the
Paris-based (Nebraska-born) artist Sheila Hicks: miniature weavings, monumental tapestries,
architectural fiber sculptures, belly bands, and more.
2:00 PM · Escape into Warhol
Penn student curators recount their adventures uncovering what really happened on
the night the Prince of Pop made his museum debut and ICA catapulted him to superstardom.
3:00 PM · In the swim
Children and adults alike are invited to make water-based monoprints and get a little wet.
4:30 PM · From the Seine to the Hudson
Navigate the streams of special guest Matthew Buckingham's work through
a conversation between the artist and ICA's Student Board.
DUSK · The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Snack on crêpes and glacé while watching the 2007 film, directed by artist Julian Schnabel,
based on the extraordinary French memoir
Le scaphandre et le papillon
by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
