Environmental Performance
This Friday at Chelsea Art Museum
Chelsea Art Museum is pleased to present the recent work of Cori Kresge, a New York City-based dance artist creating work driven by environmental and political issues. The piece entitled Sapience I-X "Human Story", portrays a dystopian vision of a future world where no animal species remain. Since humans have nothing against which to measure their own humanity, they must find new ways to define themselves collectively and individually.
The performers, adorned in military gas masks that are ornately decorated with feathers, fur, and jewels, represent the preposterous possibilities of a futuristic world. Within the gas masks, their senses are filtered and distorted, which signifies our current relationship with nature: humans trying to connect with the natural world through a barrier of man-made materials.
The work's narrative explores themes of survival, self-discovery, loneliness, opulence, arrogance, and playfulness and is driven by Kresge's interest in environmental and political issues. The image of the gas masks evokes apocalyptic fears of our present time such as terrorism, global warming, extinction, natural disasters and pandemics. But through the artful transformation of the masks, the work ultimately suggests our human resolve, primal instincts, and innate eagerness to survive.
The performance of Sapience I-X "Human Story" at Chelsea Art Museum will be its full length debut. Chapters of Sapience I-X have been performed previously at Judson Memorial Church, CPR Brooklyn, the Highline, Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, and the 92nd Street Y.
The performance will take place today
