Anastasia (Ann) Robertson
May 3-8 A one week special exhibition Vernissage - Meet the family reception, Thursday, May 5, 6-9pm Ann Robertson (1904-1965) accomplished much of her work from the front seat of her small car as she traveled through eastern Canada, stopping to paint whenever she happened upon an inspiring scene. Robertson painted the Gatineau Lakes, Quebec villages, autumn forests and coastal fishing communities, studying with Henri Masson, Haldorsen, Larry Halpin, Duncan de Kergommeaux and Gerald Trottier. In spirit, she was an abstract painter, deeply involved in relating form to the shape and surface of the canvas. Her prints are highly poetic, demanding the viewer to stop and contemplate. Roberston doesn't need shock value, instead using a visual clarity that resonates with equal impact. She was an active, (yet unheralded), member of the Ottawa art community for many years until her death in 1965.
