Red Gate Launch Pad

Vernissage :: April 23, 2011 :: 3 - 5 pm
Exhibition Dates :: April 23 - May 22, 2011

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Red Gate's residency program, Red Gate Gallery is pleased to announce "Red Gate Launch Pad"- an exhibition of fifteen Chinese artists who first embarked on their artistic journey in Beijing via the Red Gate Residency.

Red Gate Gallery has always been focused on ways to stimulate artistic exchange between Chinese artists within China as well as the promotion of international artist residencies within China. Apart from Beijing and Shanghai, Guangzhou and, to a limited extent, Chengdu, there are few major centres of artistic exchange within the country. Even though there have always been the lively art schools and major provincial universities, there was not much in the way of arts communities affording Chinese artists in regional areas the chance to exchange with other visiting artists from China or from overseas. If an artist did not go to Beijing or Shanghai, one would be, in a sense, out of the loop. For a long time the concept of artist in residence programs was not widely understood, and certainly not available within the Chinese arts infrastructure. Some artists had been selected for residencies overseas, but by and large, until recently, residencies were not apart of a Chinese artist's career development.

There had been many artists moving to Beijing but many were still missing out. Therefore, Red Gate has decided to offer a residency for Chinese artists living outside of Beijing to offer them the time and space to work in a studio environment with local and international artists in Beijing. Red Gate provided the space and a small stipend to the successful applicants. This involved a competitive application process with two deadlines a year for six two-month residencies. This program has proved very successful with some unexpected outcomes; the main one being that the bulk of the artists stayed in Beijing after their residency was over! In fact, most of the artists involved have had tremendous opportunities to participate in many exhibitions both domestically and overseas. Red Gate is proud to have been part this process and look forward to the next ten years of helping many more regional talents take flight from the Red Gate launch pad.

The exhibiting artists include Chen Wenling, Chen Yufei, Deng Yifu, Han Qing, Hu Shengping, Jiang Weitao, Liang Yue, Liu Ren, Shen Jingdong, Sun Baijun, Sun Guojian, Wang Qiang, Yang Liming, Yang Xiaofan and Zhou Jun.
