2 ROYAL QUILTS &
A ROYAL WEDDING

As we anticipate the marriage of Kate Middleton to Prince William, son of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, we recall the short life and tragic death of another beloved British princess.

Born in 1790, Princess Charlotte was the only legitimate child of an unpopular Prince of Wales (the future King George IV) and the wife from whom he separated when Charlotte was a child. Although a rebellious teenager, Charlotte was a crowd-pleaser. She chose Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to be her husband, and soon after their much-celebrated wedding, Charlotte announced her pregnancy to a nation eager for an heir to the throne. Sadly, her son was stillborn; the next day, Charlotte also died. Not until the tragic 1997 death of Diana was there such widespread sorrow over the death of a revered princess.

Princess Charlotte’s marriage and untimely death are commemorated by two quilts in the permanent collection. The Princess Charlotte Commemorative Quilt [donated by the Binney Family] commemorates the marriage of Charlotte and Leopold. It is now on display in recognition of the wedding of Kate and William. Also on display is the Multiple Chintz Medallion Coverlet [donated by Janet and David Marcus], a “piece of patchwork…finished two days previous to the death of H.R.H. Princess Charlotte.”

The Emily Munroe Quilt
A MUSEUM QUILT FOR YOU TO MAKE

Now on sale in the Museum Gift Shop: the first installment of a box-set pattern allowing you to make your own reproduction of one of the most beloved quilts in the New England Quilt Museum Permanent Collection.

Donated by Hope Carter Ayers, a descendant of the maker, the Munroe Quilt is believed to have been made in the 1860s by Emily Wiley Munroe of Lynnfield, Massachusetts. When she made this quilt from recycled wool and cotton fabrics, Emily may have been thinking thoughts of "home" as she worried over the fate of four brothers serving in the Union army during the Civil War.

The original is now on display in One Foot Square, Quilted & Bound. Like all the quilts in the exhibit, it was made one block at a time, each block quilted and finish-bound, and only then whip-stitched together to make a bed-sized cover.

The Museum-authorized Emily Munroe Quilt pattern was designed by Frances H. Quinn. For more information on purchasing this starter set of seven block patterns, email shop@nequiltmuseum.org. Additional block patterns to complete your version of the Emily Munroe Quilt will be available in the weeks to come.
