ISLAND-INSPIRED WORK BY DIANE BOWIE ZAITLIN ON VIEW AT
SACO MUSEUM
Saco, Maine— In June 2010, Saco artist Diane Bowie Zaitlin
attended a
residency at Great Spruce Head Island Artweek in Penobscot Bay. In the exhibit Point of Departure she
provides
a view of her creative process and the power of influence from a
period of immersion in her artwork in a setting of intense beauty.
Point of
Departure will be on view at the Saco Museum May 7 through
September 4,
2011. A FREE public opening reception (held in conjunction with
the concurrent
exhibition Voyages and the Age of Sail) will take place at
the Saco
Museum on Friday, May 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
During her residency, Zaitlin experimented with a variety of
artistic media. Her photographs document the varied, and often
unexpected,
sources of her inspiration. Also shown
are drawings, collages, and encaustic paintings produced both
during the
residency and in the months to follow. A
common thread of influence unites the wonderful colors, textures,
patterns, and
moods of the artist’s island experience. This
body of work illustrates what a continuing and expanding influence
just one week’s experience can provide.
About the Artist: Diane Bowie Zaitlin received a
B.F.A. from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut and
also studied
at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York. She has studied
at
Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Maine College of Art. Her
solo
exhibitions have included North Dam Mill, Biddeford, Maine (2008),
Bay View
Company, Saco (2008), University of New England, Biddeford (2004,
2000); Saco
Museum (2004), University of Connecticut, Storrs (2002), and
Davidson and
Daughters Contemporary Art, Portland, Maine (2001, 1999, 1996).
For many years,
Diane has been an artist-in-residence at schools and museums with
the Maine
Touring Artist Program of the Maine Arts Commission. She currently
teaches
small independent encaustic workshops at her studio in
Saco. For more information, visit www.dianebowiezaitlin.com
About Great Spruce Head Island Artweek: Each summer
since 1993 a group of 12 artists (painters, writers, sculptors,
photographers)—some new, some returning artists—have come to Great
Spruce Head
Island (in Maine’s Penobscot Bay) to work independently and to
share their love
of the artistic process. This large private island provides a
nurturing
environment for people with a broad range of creative expression.
In the quiet
and simplicity of island life, creativity can flourish. Art week
has no
instruction or structured workshop. Participants enjoy three
special meals a
day, a private bedroom and work space on one of five porches. The
island also
provides many opportunities for physical exercise; including miles
of hiking
trails, secluded beaches, tennis and boating. For
more information, visit http://users.lmi.net/apf/week.html.
