Join artist Aileen Bassis on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 230-350pm in the Orbit 1 gallery, located on the second floor of the Paul Robeson Campus Center).  Bassis will be conducting a public art workshop, in which passers-by participate by drawing maps of places from memory.  These works will become part of a later version of the show.

"The Objects of Memory" began as a public art project entitled "Memory Maps," conceived and created by Aileen Bassis for the "Figment2010" festival on Governor's Island, NYC.  In this project, Bassis invited people to draw maps of places from memory.  "Objects of Memory" was created using photographs of participants in the act of recollection, as well as the maps they drew, which were then manipulated with printmaking and lithograph techniques.  Bassis writes of her work, "The ideas are fragments, interrupted and blurred like our elusive memories; bits and pieces stitched together into a fragile construction underlying our present."

A Din of Murmers:

Nick Kline and the GlassBook Project

May 26 - July 28, 2011

The Glassbook Project was created as an educational program seeking to build understanding of how people might respond to trauma.  In this program, students meet with survivors of trauma and are guided by educators to research and make books on a particular topic, reflecting a survivor's point of view.

The GlassBook Project is a creation of Artist Nick Kline, done in collaboration with Project Partner Helga Luest, Witness Justice and other artists, writers, survivors, students and community organizations.

Lift Off:

Earthlings & the Great Beyond

September 1, 2011 - January 9, 2012

As the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA, best known as the agency that first put a man on the moon) prepares to put an end its moon program, the Paul Robeson Galleries presents an exhibition based on ideas and issues surrounding space: space travel, life in space, the depiction of space in popular culture, design for space, and the life of an astronaut.

Our Mission

The Paul Robeson Galleries presents critically engaging exhibitions, public events and educational programs to Rutgers University and Greater Newark audiences.  It is in the spirit of Paul Robeson himself that the gallery network is dedicated to an urban mission with an activist approach to educational and exhibitions programming.  This commitment includes organizing exhibitions and public programs on local, regional, and international contemporary art and culture, as well as developing civic partnerships through community outreach programs.  Our aim is to initiate cross-disciplinary and civic dialogues as ways of strengthening bonds between art, education, and democracy.  Our exhibitions, programs, and events are always free and open to the public.
