The Company of Men
June 2 - July 9, 2011

Opening Reception:  June 10, 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Michael Mut Gallery is pleased to present a Solo Exhibition of the artwork
of George Towne.GeorgeTowneArt

The exhibition consists of paintings based on Towneʼs meditative examination of gay men's masculinity and beauty. The images depict men who have directly affected, influenced, and changed Towne; and fueled his personal journey towards Self-Realization. The artist explains, "People have come and gone in my life, and loss has not always been easy for me to deal with, but if I have been able to paint them, it's like capturing them and holding them with me forever."   View more of George Towne's art on the Michael Mut Gallery website.

Towne's work is engaging, sexually charged, and is set in defined backgrounds. This allows him to highlight specific light sources and utilize his "Painterly Realistic" style.

Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Port Jervis, New York, Towne realized he loved drawing as a young man, and often found himself copying caricatures out of old "Mad" Magazines. After his high school art teacher bought him his first set of oil paints, he started to become more serious about making art. Towne cites Old Masters Caravaggio and Velasquez, as well as American painter Thomas Eakins, as his influences.

Towne's grants, residencies, and awards include: Visual AIDS Materials Grant, 2007, 2009, 2010; SVA Summer Studio Residencies, 2006, 2007; Stonewall Community Foundation, 2002; Paula Rhodes Memorial Award, 1997; and the SVA Alumni Society Award.

His work has been reproduced and written about in publications such as American Artist Magazine, Time Out New York, and HX. Next Magazine put a piece on the Cover in Spring 2010. Recently, he has been attending two Gay Men's "Erotic Life Drawing" groups: "The Leslie/Lohman Erotic Drawing Studio" and "Harvey Redding's Queer Men's Erotic Art Workshop" that meets at the LGBT Center.

1000 Hearts
Closing: May 28, 1pm-6pm

1000 Hearts at Michael Mut Gallery, NY, New YorkMichael Mut Gallery is pleased to present Kristen Zwickerʼs "1,000 Hearts", curated by Michael Mut. Zwicker uses a simple yet beautiful medium, the origami heart, to invite people to join in a phenomenological experience. Zwicker asks a deceptively simple question: What do you love about yourself?

Ultimately, this finds a person in reflection or analysis of awareness, whether it be; temporal, spatial, self-experience, selfawareness, awareness of others, or linguism. Zwickerʼs existential approach encourages people to inwardly explore and discover what they truly love about themselves. Many of us have never been asked this question and in our search for an answer, we find ourselves examining both self and love.

Installation runs from May 7 to May 28 at Michael Mut Gallery.
