REBEKAH JACOB GALLERY 169 KING ST. CHARLESTON, SC 29401
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE/ MAY 11, 2011
“SUMMER”
In celebration of contemporary art in Charleston, upcoming exhibition SUMMER highlights six leading contemporary artists from the US, many from the Low Country. The exhibition brings together progressive artists whose works branches across painting, works on paper, photography, and video. SUMMER’S artists—Kendall Messick (New York, NY), Brian Rutenberg (New York, NY), Benjamin Hollingsworth (Charleston, SC and New York, NY), Kevin Taylor (San Francisco, CA), Timothy Pakron (Charleston, SC and New York, NY), and Tim Hussey (Charleston, SC)—all have expanded the conventional definitions of their medium, intersecting currents of contemporary art today. Many works will be offered for $5,000 or less, encouraging both seasoned and new collectors to support-and celebrate-Charleston’s contemporary art scene. A short film about the exhibition, by Pistil Films, accompanies the exhibition. SUMMER opens on Thursday, June 16 from 5:30-8:30 PM at 169 King Street, downtown Charleston. Most artists will be present.
About the Artists:
HUSSEYexplores various media through interrelated realms of illustration, figure painting and pure abstraction. His paintings are infused with intense color and texture, allowing the chaotic nature of the media to work to his advantage. HOLLINGSWORTH creates multi-media, seductive, and intense surfaces, which are often paradoxical. The large African heads on paper are compelling and mix social content. RUTENBERG exhibits abstracted canvases of bold colors and dense textures inspired by the low country seascapes and landscapes. TAYLOR’S surreal work deals with humankind, relationships, environment, and positioning of animals in the landscape. Ongoing themes include the conundrum of man and woman, as well as the animal qualities of all humans. PAKRON’S oeuvre of painting focuses on the non-vanity and abstract portrait; quick short brushstrokes and a bold palette exemplify his trademark style. Through large color photographs, MESSICK tells the story of Delaware Projectionist Gordon Brinkle. Over the course of 50 years Brinkle built and “managed” a miniature theater in his basement (Note: Mark Sloan of the Halsey Institute contributed to the recent publication of the Projectionist book, by Princeton Architectural Press).
