| During his travels, Isamu Noguchi's many drawings served as a record of his daily life, and his sketchbook renderings of animals, dating from the 1920s through the early 1950s, form a particularly rich area of focus. Tracks: Animal Drawings from Noguchi's Travels comprises about forty of these virtuoso, improvisational drawings.
Together, the drawings demonstrate that, despite an enduring reputation as an artist interested in abstraction and spatial issues, Noguchi avidly explored figuration, and that, furthermore, it informed much of his work. At once charming and masterful, the ink and pencil drawings on view in the exhibition capture animals as part of city scenes and as architectural details; in some instances they are depicted side by side with studies for the artist's abstract sculpture.
