Designs of Nature
Fried Contemporary Art Gallery & Studio, Brooklyn, ZA
South Africa
This exhibition forms part of a series of exhibitions that will take place
in 2011: Designs of time, Designs of living, Designs of nature and Designs
of self. The idea is to link the four exhibitions in terms of how
individuals live and 'design' their lives from within societies and how
they operate in history, time and contexts. In Designs of nature, several
of the artworks comment on technologies that are encroaching upon our
inner space, invading our bodies and consciousnesses. - Read

THE POSSESSED
Charlie Smith London, London, UK United Kingdom
Starting from unlimited freedom, I arrived at unlimited despotism
Dostoyevsky, The Devils. The resistance unites amidst a fiery reality ripe
with revolution, saviors and avengers possessed by the justified hope of
liberty, agents of change unwittingly play host to the infernal and flag
bearers carry the burden of past catastrophes into the flames of rebellion
once again. Hunting for new prospects beyond the vanishing point, their
thousand yard stares reach into the sky coalescing with the last rays of
light from the horizon. - Read

Inside Looking Out
Dublin Arts Council, Dublin, OH USA United States of
America
Inside Looking Out is a dual exhibition inspired by the windows, natural
light and surrounding landscape of the Dublin Arts Council gallery.
Painter David Jewell, who currently lives in Athens, Ohio, often creates
interior scenes where a window, its light and view are significant parts
of the composition. His landscapes will offer an interesting counterpoint
to the interiors. Ceramicist Sara Gallo, who lives and works in
Philadelphia, provides complement and contrast through an installation of
glazed objects that are often displayed on walls in constellation-like
compositions. - Read

The Magna Carta
California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francsco, CA
USA United States of America
The Magna Carta (or Great Charter of English Liberties), one of the most
important legal documents in the history of democracy, is on display, an
annual celebration of cultural crosscurrents between Great Britain and
California. The manuscript is presented with an English translation in
Gallery 3 under the Legions prized Spanish ceiling dating from
approximately 1500. This is an extremely rare public appearance for this
particular Magna Carta, one of the earliest surviving manuscripts, in the
United States. Its declaration that no free man should be imprisoned
without due process underlies the development of common law in England as
well as the concepts of individual liberty and constitutional government
that created the United States. - Read

CALL FOR ARTISTS: 2011 Open Exhibition: small works.
Photomedia Center, Erie, PA USA United States of America
As photography entered the digital age, photographers have been drawn to
the ability to compete with the grandeur of paintings and other mediums.
Unfettered by traditional darkroom processing, fine art photography is no
longer limited by size. In response to this trend, Photomedia Center has
dedicated its 2011 Open Juried Exhibition to displaying small photographic
works, to remind viewers of the level of detail that can be captured and
the feeling of intimacy when you approach an object of diminutive size.
Images that work well small can deliver big impact. - Read

Arngunnur Yr: Heimat & Nadja Poppe: Land
Cain Schulte Gallery Berlin, Berlin, DE Germany
Heimat, new oil paintings by Icelandic artist Arngunnur Yr, and Land, new
drawings by the young Dresden artist Nadja Poppe make up this exhibition.
Yr's artworks, mostly oil on wood or aluminum panel, are classical
landscape paintings in the sense that they consist of traditional surfaces
familiar to us. In combination with soft and mellow colors, these
landscapes seem inviting, poetic and seductive to their viewers. Yr is
very aware of this effect and uses it to push the limits of her
extraordinary painting technique further to manipulate what is seemingly
perfect. - Read

Illuminating the Serenissima: Books of the Republic of Venice
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, MA USA United
States of America
La Serenissima, or the Most Serene Republic of Venice, existed for over a
millennium from the late seventh century to 1797. At the height of its
power in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, it was the center of an
empire extending from mainland Italy to the eastern Mediterranean. The
head of state was a Doge elected for life by the nobility, whose privilege
and duty it was to manage Venice's political affairs. Books, called
commissioni, contained the contracts of Venetian noblemen elected by their
peers to oversee the Republic's provinces usually for sixteen months, or to
be lifelong administrators of the city of Venice. From the second half of
the fifteenth century until the fall of the Republic, office-holders had
their commissioni elaborately written, illuminated, and bound by hand, and
conserved them for posterity. Commemorating service to the state, personal
achievement, and taste, these manuscripts were objects of privilege,
power, and beauty. - Read
