July Films: "Nainsukh" + "Floating Weeds"

Jul 14 + Jul 28, 6:30pm

Two films will be screened in conjunction with WAM's current permanent collection exhibitions:  Persian and Indian Miniatures and Encore!: Japanese Actor Prints.

Both collection exhibitions are on view until Aug 7, 2011.

Nainsukh (Jul 14) is a beautiful 2010 film by Amit Dutta based on the life of 18th-century Indian painter Nainsukh of Guler.

Floating Weeds (July 28) was remade in 1959 by acclaimed Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu when he colorized the 1934 classic A Story of Floating Weeds.  Ozu worked together with celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa (RashomonUgetsu) on the project.

Film: Rackstraw Downes: An Interview

Aug 11, 6:30pm

The evening's program features two short interviews filmed in 1980 and 2006 that provide unique insights into the work of Rackstraw Downes and complement the exhibition, Rackstraw Downes: Onsite Paintings, 1972-2008 on view at the Weatherspoon until August 21, 2011.

WAM Docent Training Begins August 29

Application deadline: Aug 1

A shared curiosity and desire to create meaningful learning experiences is an essential part of engaging visitors with contemporary art.  At the Weatherspoon Art Museum, a current corps of 15 volunteer docents assists visitors of all ages as tour guides and "Ask Me" greeters. Docents come from a variety of disciplines and life experiences but they share a love of learning, art and interacting with the public.

Docent training begins Aug. 29 and is held two Monday mornings per month from 10 a.m.-noon during the fall semester. In the spring, docents begin leading tours while participating in continuing education classes to learn about the latest exhibitions. Classes are taught by museum curators and staff.

While the majority of tours take place during the school day, volunteer opportunities do exist for evening and weekend docents. Docents are asked to give a minimum of two tours per month during the academic year and may choose to work with preK-12 students, college students, adults and/or special needs visitors. Prior docent or teaching experience is not required.  Applications for the 2011-12 Docent Program will be accepted until Aug. 1, 2011.

You can find more information online or by contacting Ann Grimaldi, Curator of Education, at (336) 334-5770 or ann_grimaldi@uncg.edu.
