Art South Africa attended the 2011 National Arts
Festival, which ran from 1-10 July 2011. Pictured here is ‘Tomorrow’s Joy’ a
bottle-top mosaic commissioned for the NAF by the Johannesburg Arts Alive
International Festival and conceptualized by Hannelie

Ernest Cole Award
Winner Announced:
Photographer Dale Yudelman is the
first winner of the newly established Ernest Cole Award for photography in
South Africa. On the 30 June the adjudication committee chose his
project – “From the Hip”, from a final selection of five entries. More here.

2011 Standard Bank Ovation
Awards Winners Roundup:
A total of seven Silver, two Gold and three Encore Ovation awards
were presented by Festival Director Ismail Mahomed, Mandie van der Spuy of
Standard Bank and Festival Board Member Ellinor Sisulu. More here.

Andrew
Putter in Venice Biennale Group Show:
Work by local artist Andrew Putter will be showcased in the
large group exhibition PERSONAL STRUCTURES, which is part of the 54th Venice
Biennale. The exhibition will include 28 artists from 12 countries, like Marina
Abramovic, Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth, Francois Morellet, Rene Rietmeyer,
Lee Ufan, Arnulf Rainer. More here.

Sit Down and Shut Up
Seminar Tonight:
The “Sit Down and Shut Up!” Censorship of the Arts
Seminar is taking place at a significant time in South Africa's law-making
history. The Films and Publications Act is currently being amended, and
attempts to muffle our creative and critical voices. The seminar, which takes
place on 13 July 2011 at 5.30 pm, is described as a place where those concerned
about the bill can “make your voice heard”. More here.

The Brundibár Project
was initiated by the Cape Town Holocaust Centre to promote visual and
performing arts, while using them as a vehicle for remembering and honouring,

Festival:
South African foodies are in for a
weekend packed with surprises at the first Toffie Food Festival and Conference,
which takes place at the Cape Town City Hall on Saturday and Sunday, 3-4
September. Speaking at the event with other international and local food
experts will be Julie Powell on whose life the movie Julie and Julia was based.

African promoters of the John Cleese Alimony Tour today announced an additional
performance by this comedy legend at the Cape Town International Convention
