Film: "Floating Weeds"

Jul 28, 6:30pm

In 1959, acclaimed Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu remade his 1934 classic A Story of Floating Weeds in color with the celebrated cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa (RashomonUgetsu). Setting his later version in a seaside location, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Considered one of Ozu’s best films, Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle.

Directed by Yasujiro Ozu, 1959. Japanese with English subtitles. 120 minutes. DVD format.  Free.

Floating Weeds will be screened in conjunction with WAM's current permanent collection exhibition Encore!: Japanese Actor Prints, on view
until Aug 7, 2011.
