RIP Wolf Weinek:

 

Austrian born and South African based artist and one of the founding members of the Market Gallery, Wolf Weinek (74), passed away in early July 2011 He is remembered by Cati Weinek in a tribute to a man described as “husband, father, grandfather, friend, cultural activist, teacher and mentor." Auction at Michaelis School of Fine Art Tonight:

 

Tonight, 20 July 2011, the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, is hosting an auction of work of its prestigious alumni and staff, in aid of bursaries and scholarships at the school, Hiddingh Campus, 37 Orange Street, Gardens, Cape Town. The auction on Wednesday 20 July is at 17.30 for 18:30 and run in partnership with Strauss & Co auctioneers. More here.
 

Absa L’Atelier Art Awards Top 10 Exhibition:


The exhibition of the top 10 works will be on show to the public from the 26th of July 2011 at Absa Gallery, Upper Ground Level, Absa Towers North, 161 Main Street where the winner of the Absa L’Atelier and Gerard Sekoto winner will be announced. More here.

The African Art Centre takes pleasure in inviting you to the opening of a solo exhibition showcasing recent work by Vulindlela Nyoni. African Renaissance Conference:

 

The 13th annual African Renaissance Conference will be hosted during the 4th and 5th August 2011 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban. The festival will celebrate, debate and examine broader issues related to re-defining and rebuilding the African continent through accessing and developing its own rich social, economic and political resources. Sasol New Signatures Competition: Profile – Richardt Strydom:

 

Mossel Bay-born Strydom believes that the competition offers a great opportunity to young and unestablished artists to exhibit their work on a national platform. Wavescape at the Durban International Film Festival:

 

The festival includes a tumultuous documentary about a schism that splits Papau New Guinea villagers apart, a flowing depiction of South Africa's surfing dolphins, and a music video by Paul McCartney and filmmaker Jack McCoy. More here.
