Opening Reception June 30, 6 – 8 pm

Martos Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by New York based artists Colin Snapp and Daniel Turner.

Continuing his ongoing analysis of pastoral and civic divisions, Colin Snapp will exhibit a new series of enlarged video stills depicting interior and exterior landscapes. Several of these images illuminate conditions that have severe impact on flora and fauna physiology as well as human health. Contrasting images were shot on location in the Hoh rain forest, the focal point at what audio ecologist believe to be the quietest place on earth.

Daniel Turner will exhibit a site-specific sculpture composed of iron oxide stains upon the gallery floor. Widespread in nature, iron oxide (commonly known as rust) plays a critical role in many natural processes. Due to its inherent properties, this material is utilized in ores, pigments, catalysts and thermite, yet is simultaneously responsible for the collapse of significant structures throughout history. Central to Turner’s practice, the work on view is imbued with temporal lineage.

Snapp and Turner have been collaborating under the name Jules Marquis for over a decade. This marks the first time the artists have exhibited together with their independent works present.

Colin Snapp (Lopez Island, WA 1982) has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Times Square AEO LED Billboard Project, Sculpture Center, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Recess Activities, White Box Gallery, Jericho Ditch, Triple Canopy, and Proyectos Ultravioleta.

Daniel Turner (Portsmouth, VA 1983) has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Selected shows include: Wallspace Gallery, West Street Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art, New Jersey Museum of Contemporary Art, The Chrysler Museum Of Art, Jericho Ditch, Walter and Mcbean Gallery, Prague Biennale 5 and Pianissimo Gallery.
