Film: Rackstraw Downes: An Interview

Aug 11, 6:30pm

If you missed hearing Rackstraw Downes during his visit in June—now is your chance to see him in a filmed interview!

The evening's program features two short interviews filmed in 1980 and 2006 that provide unique insights into the work of Rackstraw Downes and complement the exhibition, Rackstraw Downes: Onsite Paintings, 1972-2008 on view at the Weatherspoon until August 21, 2011.  Free.

Read a new article appearing online at Artes Magazine about Mr. Downes by writer Bill Morris.

Exhibition Opens: "Race and Representation: The African American Presence in American Art"

Aug 20 (no reception)

Drawn from the Weatherspoon’s permanent collection, this selection of artworks of different media and time periods will explore and affirm the fundamental interconnection of the African American presence in American visual culture.  Race and Representation opens on Saturday, Aug 20 and runs until Nov 20.

Exhibition Opens: "Fritz Janschka: My Choice: 'Joyce' "

Aug 20 (no reception)

Fritz Janschka has been fascinated with the work of James Joyce throughout his artistic career. Likely one of the few people who have read the bulk of Joyce's work, Janschka has drawn inspiration from it to create paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture that are as fantastical, witty, and filled with sly social commentary as Joyce's writings are. Featured in this exhibition are selections from two series of artworks, Finnegans Wake and Chamber Music.  Fritz Janschka: My Choice: "Joyce" opens on Saturday, Aug 20 and runs until Nov 20.
