GIPCA Dance and Film
Conference in August:
The Gordon Institute of Performing and
Creative Arts (GIPCA) will be hosting a conference on the artistic intersection
between dance and film. From 26 to 28 August filmmakers and choreographers will
switch roles in the process of creating an interdisciplinary art form known as
screen dance. More here.

Dakar Biennale in spotlight at African Art Talk:
An illustrated
talk about the Dakar Biennale is presented at 6 Spin Street in Cape Town on
Tuesday 16 August at 6.30pm.
It will be
presented by independent writer, critic and commentator Marilyn Martin, one of
five curators for Dak’Art 2010. It is the first in a series of Art Talks,
hosted by the African Arts Institute and focusing on topics related to

Lloyd Pollak’s Lectures on
Picasso:
SMAC
Art Gallery will be hosting a four part lecture series presented by Lloyd
Pollak on Picasso’s life till Mid-career. The
lecture series is made up of four parts each dealing with a specific aspect of
Picasso’s work and his influence in shaping major art movements of the 20th

New Dance 2011:
New Dance
2011, a platform for contemporary dance, will be presented in Johannesburg from
6 to 18 September, 2011. The main venue is the Dance Factory, Newtown, with
further performances at GoetheonMain at Arts on Main and the old Johannesburg

ballet guest stars will perform at Artscape Opera House on August 21 at 7pm at
the Keith Mackintosh Scholarship Award evening. The Keith Mackintosh

Another Accolade for Paul Emmanuel’s Debut
Artist’s Film.
3SAI: A RITE OF PASSAGE, an award-winning, 14 minute experimental film by
Paul Emmanuel was shortlisted by an international jury as one of three NOMINATIONS
for The Best Experimental Film of the 9th IN
THE PALACE International Short Film Festival, Balchik, Bulgaria. This was
the film's 8th international film festival official selection and screening
since the 2010 Videogud International Video Art Programme and Festival in

performance poetry project. It aims at empowering university students, youth

Alive 2011 programme:
This year’s
Joburg Arts Alive International Festival has commissioned iconic Joburg poet
Don Mattera to write a work that reflects the importance of art in our society.
He will be collaborating with another iconic son of Joburg, Pops Mohamed.
Through this piece, which debuts at the festival’s Opening on September 1 at
The Fringe, spoken word becomes the significant springboard for the entire

& Guardian Literary Festival 2011:
Johannesburg’s
time has come – or at least its 125th birthday. Founded in October 1886,
Jo’burg is the centrepiece for this year’s M&G Literary Festival. It runs
at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg, from September 2 to 4. More here.

Jane Taylor premières After Cardenio:
Jane Taylor,
in association with the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts
(GIPCA), presents the premiere of After Cardenio. It will be held at the newly
renovated Anatomy Theatre on the top floor of the Old Medical Building on
Hiddingh campus, UCT. Previews are on 23 and 24 August, and the run is from 25
August - 2 September at 20:00. More here.

Simon Cooper elected to Pansa Western Cape:
Theatre owner
and producer Simon Cooper has been elected as the new Chairperson of Pansa in
the Western Cape and has joined the National Steering Committee. Cooper is
co-owner of Kalk Bay Theatre and founder of KBT Productions, producers of plays
such as the multiple award-winning London Road and Sie Weiss Alles which won a
Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award at this year’s National Arts Festival. More here.
