The LVAC was established in 1989 with the mission statement to promote the arts; to support and encourage artists and their development; to assist arts organizations; and to facilitate communication and cooperation among artists, arts organizations, and the community. The money raised from this auction will specifically go to their Urban/Suburban Connection after-school programs that help local children improve literacy and foster multi-cultural understanding. It connects students from urban and suburban schools through the arts. Their programs also benefit participating teachers by providing professional development and networking opportunities. An example of a past Urban/Suburban Connection program is “Making My Mark,” in which students from Trexler Middle School and Southern Lehigh Middle School used poetry, narrative writing, and journal entries as the subject matter for collages, found object assemblages, and collagraph prints. This exhibit is in support of the new Moravian In Focus topic for the 2011-2012 year of Poverty and Inequality. Jonathan Kozol, an esteemed writer on the topic of inequality in education, will be giving the colloquium presentation on Thursday, September 15, and we thought it would be fitting to hold the auction in support of his mission to provide equal educational opportunities to all children. Moravian students, faculty, and alumni are all encouraged to donate work. The artwork that is donated can be any medium: photographs, drawings, paintings, graphic design, printmaking, etc. Moravian will also have a display case for small ceramic pieces, jewelry, and any other small 3-D works. Each work will be on display in the HUB from September 12th to September 26th with a paper next to it for silent auction bids.
