Call for Entries - 2012

July 27, 2010
Dear Albion,

You are invited again to apply to 2012 shows in the Palms Springs/Desert Cities Resort area.

As mentioned last year many artists had urged planning low cost shows for the "open" weekends in the Winter Tourist Season show schedule in the Southwest so you all could capitalize on selling when Tourists from around the World were staying warm in the Southwest. At least 2 of our date are on "open" weekends and all are low cost.

Over 350 artists helped spark the launch of a highly acclaimed series of shows from Halloween through Presidents Weekend. Our volunteers received so many comments from patrons departing the shows exclaiming that the quality of artists was among the best they had ever seen at any art festival. Now, after 3 shows, art lovers in our area have taken notice and we have them right were we want them! :)   We invite you to join us.

I regret your late notice, but computers "went missing" last November, followed by a Microsoft "Opportunity" arising in the new, replacement Win7 system. I am still recovering and the delay could not be helped.

We have decided not to attempt an OctoberFest this year. With "Debt Ceiling Theater" enjoying such a "long run" in DC to such horrible reviews, we concluded that we did not want to risk your Time and Money nor ours at the beginning of the Season before all this has played out.

Timing of our 2012 Schedule

We are "moving" OctoberFest to Mardi Gras for 2012 - trading one costume for another. At the beginning of March, we know there will be more, and more monied, Tourists "in Valley". And, hopefully cooler temperatures.

Ours will be the first, third and fourth shows of the High Season in our fashionable Tourist and SnowBird destination.

Our Show offerings in Palm Springs for 2012

January) Again, 'the Classic' January 20-22 will be tying in with the Bob Hope Classic tournament, which will have Bill Clinton in Valley and the Clinton Foundation as a co-sponsor this year;

February) Also again, 'Presidents' Weekend', February 17-20. This year, this CAN be a 4 day, a 3 day or a 2 day show for you. The "holiday" for those who get it, is on Monday, of course, but many people's schedules are chopped up by work or school. We are offering artists a flexible schedule.

This weekend is, barring snow and bilblical rains, the biggest Tourist weekend of the Season. Many touring artists across the West and Southwest experienced the effects of a freak storm named "Apocalypse" last year.

Our venue allows us to offer artists the option of either all 4 days, a 3 day (Fri-Sun or Sat-Mon) or a 2 day show for the same price.

The Palm Springs location has proven to be a very easy set-up & tear-down. Thus, we are able to allow early morning set-up on Saturday for those whose schedules can only accommodate a Saturday-Sunday and/or Monday show.

All 4 day artists and Friday-Saturday-Sunday artists will set-up Thursday or early Friday morning in the prime locations. Others joining later will be layered around this core group.

March) 'Mardi Gras', March 2-4. This is the weekend before La Quinta and one of the last 2 or 3 good weekends of Tourist Season. Those artists who "commute" in RVs and will be doing the following LQ show can stay at the Festival Grounds Monday and Tuesday nights while waiting for their Wednesday load-in at LaQuinta.

Because all 3 shows are so close together, the Application deadlines will be the same for all 3 - September 12.

As I have already juried or reviewed your work at another show, you are among the 'pre-selected' artists.

If your are signed up with ZAPPlication, you can ZAPPly, if not, you can access our "paper" application via our website link below.

Pricing and Layout

Because of the month's delay in notification, I am extending to you the "early bird" Entry fee of $25 per show along with a discount on Doubles and Quads.  So, $25 and early acceptance, if you apply by September 12. If you are interested in applying, but need a bit more time (we've all seen the Wild Mouse, aka the Dow), please write or call.

IF you apply via ZAPPlication, you can use the following discount 'coupons' to get the $25 Entry Fee: "the Classic" - 'JanBird', "Presidents' Weekend" - 'FebBird', "Mardi Gras" - 'MarBird'.

Space fees are still very affordably priced with the standard single at $200, doubles at $350 and quads at $500. Save with our 'Early Bird' and larger space discounts.  See the Fees Table on our application for specifics.

$500 'QUAD' SPECIAL!! Save $150! Especially for sculptors and large format artists, we repeat this 'Early Bird' special offer. If you've always thought, "I could sell more if only I could afford to display more", here's your opportunity.

For those who Apply with paper Applications, send in your combined Space Fee  and City Licenses Fee checks along with your Entry Fee and Application (and Electric Fee, if desired). As these 3 are packed fairly close together, we understand that covering 3 shows at once by check can be daunting, even if they are being cashed on a staggered basis. (Space Fee checks will not be deposited until after the specific jury. If you need some extra spacing beyond the dates you see in the Application, put a Post-It on your Feb or Mar check and we'll work something out.

OR, we can process your Fees on most credit cards.

We will still employ the grid layout. No one seemed to complain about having a "corner" and it provides plenty of space for set-up & tear-down.

Jury Image Notes

We will again accept high-resolution images of your work (4) and booth image submitted either on CD (preferred) or as digital images attached to emails (Artists@PSAF.biz), or photos again this year. (Please no slides.) More tips on images are on the FAQs page of our Artists website: PSAF.biz

Why do we need your images?? First, this is a juried show. Secondly, we try to display a range images of different types of art in our promotional spreads. We cannot advertise you without your images. And, besides, as you all are just getting better, we are anxious to see how you have evolved.

Remember, September 12 is the deadline for all of our 2012 shows (USPS Postmark - no need to Express)! Answers to other questions should be in the website or Application. If you don't find your answer, call or write.

We are extremely honored to have had  Amado Peņa, Jr. (October), Felicia (January) and Dan and Joi LaChaussee (March) as the 'Featured Artist' for our premier season.

Arguably, Amado is one of the most well known and highly regarded artists of the Southwest today.

Felicia is very connected to our Valley, her monumental 'Cahuilla Family' graces the Point Happy Center in La Quinta.

Dan and Joi LaChaussee's dazzling glass sculptures lit up our February show.

Every newsletter I try to bring you a few observations on the Economy and the implications for the Art World. I hope they bring you cheer or, at least, a different perspective.

It is still too early for the 4Q11 reports from the Big 3, but every few weeks one or more is re-firing a plant, an assembly line or a shift. Can you believe the "new" GM and Chrysler have paid back almost all of their loans?? The "critics" had written Detroit off for dead. Some companies are working, even if the Big Banks aren't. Some manufacturing plants are working again, even if the Market is diving.

The recent Vail show was reportedly well attended with some artists very pleased with their results. The Krasl Art Fair a couple of weekends ago was also very well-attended. Despite being located on the leeward bluffs above The Michigan Ocean in St Joseph, MI, the Krasl tried to compete with the Prescott, AZ show - at least 102 on Sunday!! No cool breezes off The Michigan Ocean, so many customers had to leave early. But, a beautiful show again, nonetheless.
