Join No Festival Required at a free
screening of the film “Beadle Architecture”. The filmmaker Suzanne
Johnson will attend for a Q and A following the screening, and the
definitive Beadle Architecture book “Constructions”will be
available for sale at a special NFR discounted price!
Directed and produced by Cave Creek
film-maker Suzanne Johnson, the video is an homage to the
architectural legacy of Alfred N. Beadle V (1927-1998) whose
“inhabitable sculptures” stand alone in the region in which he
chose to live and practice architecture. Beadle’s importance to
history and local architectural awareness is next to that of Frank
Lloyd Wright here in Arizona.
With interviews with the late Beadle and
architects, builders and students who came in contact with Al’s
somewhat abrasive and self-assured philosophy, the film confronts
Beadle’s challenges against the “Taco Bells” and “Mud Huts” of
mass-produced construction.
We are surrounded by the high rise
buildings, multiple-family housing and apartment complexes, single
family homes and commercial office structures, warehouses and
retail buildings created by Al Beadle. The film shows how they
were different, and how they changed forever our preconceptions of
Southwestern architecture.
The video’s director, Suzanne Johnson,
is the Executive Director of Gnosis, Ltd., a non-profit
organization dedicated to understanding the artist’s creative
process.
