Two-day Symposium
Prints and the Pursuit of Knowledge in Early Modern Europe
Friday, December 2, 2011, 5–8pm
Saturday, December 3, 2011, 8:30am–6:30pm

This symposium will focus on issues raised by the exhibition Prints and the Pursuit of Knowledge, such as the uses of printed images of subjects from nature; the influence of Albrecht Dürer’s theoretical treatises on art and science; and how printing on paper enabled the production of knowledge. It begins with an evening reception and tours of the exhibition.

Before cameras, GPS systems, and wristwatches, how did people record what they saw? navigate their journeys? tell time? Three days of themed family activities, including gallery explorations and art-making experiences, show visitors how artists of the 16th century contributed to scientific investigations and shaped the way people understood their world.

Artist Alexis Rockman, whose paintings harness the power of metaphor to create compelling visions of our complicated relationship to the natural world, and ocean biologist James McCarthy, a leader in bridging science and policy in his work on global climate change, will discuss the interconnections of art and science in the 21st century. More
