WHITE LIES
A ghostly
video sculpture and a light installation that sends a
coded message showcased in TNG’s first fall show
Calgary - August 25, 2011 -
The New Gallery (TNG) is pleased
to announce
the opening of
White Lies,
a beautifully
ethereal yet
eerie
exhibition by
the artistic
duo Harri de
Ville.
Comprised of
one video
sculpture and
one light
installation,
White Lies
explores the
seductive
aspects of
urban life
emphasizing
the
claustrophobic
and violent
perspectives
they often
convey.
In their video
sculpture Untitled #3, Harri de Ville uses
sandblasted
plexiglas, a
fan, video
projection,
neons, and a
15 minute
video loop to
create a
minimalist
form that
seems
inhabited by a
sensual,
ghostly, hazy
presence. For
the
light
installation No Fear No Hope, the artists
offer up a
darkened room
were a lamp is
hanging from
the ceiling,
almost
touching the
floor. It
flickers
incessantly
causing a
feeling of
restlessness
to the viewer.
Through
repetition,
the viewer
might notice
that the
flickering is
actually a
Morse code
messaging "No
Fear No Hope".
In
both
pieces, Harri
de Ville hopes
to convey the
notion of the
aestheticization
of
violence
within our
urban
environments
and how our
bodies and
nature are
merely
concepts,
representations,
phantoms or
replicas.
Harri
de
Ville is a
duo project
formed in 2005
by Sabrina
Harri
(Finland) and
Alexia de
Ville de Goyet
(Belgium). The
project was
initially
based on VJing
experimentations
and video
performances
that took
place in many
festivals in
Europe. In
2009, their
work extended
to objects and
installations,
defining an
interdisciplinary
language in
which
abstraction
and narrative
elements
merge. Since
then, they
have been
extensively
exhibiting
together under
the name Harri
de Ville,
conducting the
project in
parallel with
their solo
careers.
Sabrina Inkeri
Harri studied
Fine Arts at
La Villa Arson
in Nice,

Geneva's
University of
Art and Design
in
