MATTRESS FACTORY ANNOUNCES FACTORY INSTALLED
AN EXHIBITION OF SIX INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS CURATED BY LUDEROWSKI, OLIJNYK, AND TALCOTT
PITTSBURGH, PA (September 1, 2011) – On October 28, 2011, the Mattress Factory will open Factory Installed, an exhibition last presented at the museum in 2006. Factory Installed will support and exhibit new work by a selection of artists from throughout the world who had responded to an open submission call to the artist-in-residence program in January 2011.
From the nearly 600 artist submissions, six artists have been chosen by co-directors Barbara Luderowski & Michael Olijnyk and independent curator Katherine Talcott to work in residence in September and October 2011. The artists, Pablo Valbuena, Mariana Manhães, Natalia Gonzalez, Nika Kupyrova, Than Htay Maung, and Veronica Ryan, will create new site-specific works for the Factory Installed exhibition and will be on view October 28, 2011 – May 2012.
A public reception celebrating the exhibition’s opening will take place on Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Mattress Factory’s main galleries located at 500 Sampsonia Way. Admission is $10 and MF Members are always free. For more information, visit http://www.mattress.org
THE ARTISTS: PABLO VALBUENA Pablo Valbuena was born in 1978 in Madrid and lives and works there. His work focuses on the construction and transformation of space with perceptual tools rather than physical ones. Using projected light as medium, his installations explore ways of building an environment that overlap the ‘real’ and the ‘virtual’, abstract representation and physical elements, layering these concepts on top of each other. He has exhibited his work at the Netherlands Media Art Institute (Amsterdam), 5th International Seoul Media Art Biennale (Seoul, Korea), Museum of the Moving Image (New York), OK Center for Contemporary Art (Linz, Austria), Bankart Studio NYK (Yokohama, Japan), Den Haag City Hall (The Hague, the Netherlands) and other exhibitions and public art projects in Singapore, Canada, USA, France, Belgium and Spain.
MARIANA MANHÃES Mariana Manhães was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1977 where she is currently pursuing a Masters in Communication and Culture at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Her work is an intersection of artistic and technological experimentation that takes form in different types of media. She invents intricate systems that can lead to the production of drawings, animations, videos, digitally modified photographs and organic machines that respond to each other, mimicking human or animal behavior. She has exhibited her work throughout South America and Europe. See her blog tracking her development and creation of her installation for the Mattress Factory: http://marianaatthefactory.wordpress.com/
NATALIA GONZALEZ Natalia Gonzalez was born in 1978 in Bolivia and is currently pursuing graduate studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Her work includes events and recorded responses to a specific place using accessible materials such as lamps, bricks, and string. She uses a video camera to document these activities as well as a tool for drawing. In this sense, the recording itself is the material, creating a sequence of images that are articulated in time. Gonzalez has exhibited throughout Bolivia in Santa Cruz, La Paz, Cochabamba, and Sucre, as well as in the Washington/Baltimore area, Santiago, and Buenos Aires.
NIKA KUPYROVA Nika Kupyrova was born 1985 in Kiev, Ukraine, and currently lives and works in Prague and Vienna. She received a degree in art from the Edinburgh College of Art. Her artistic practice focuses on mixed-media installation and photography, using re-assembled found materials to explore the quality of space as a habitat and a concept of ‘home.’ Her work has been exhibited as part of the Tkachi-Project, St.Petersburg, Russia; and in the 2nd Moscow International Biennale of Young Art. She has also exhibited widely throughout Europe.
THAN HTAY MAUNG
Than Htay Maung was born in 1958 in Pathien, Burma. He lives in Pittsburgh with his wife Khet Mhar an exiled writer who received political asylum in the U.S. His installation work, created out of found materials, is politically charged commentary on news and its veracity and dissemination to the public. Whether making an installation about satellite news distribution in Burma or sending SOS bottles filled with commentary down the Irrawaddy River, Than Htay Maung’s work always asks the viewer to question what he or she believes to be the truth. He has previously exhibited in a Gestures exhibition at the Mattress Factory and in New York.
VERONICA RYAN Veronica Ryan was born in 1956 in Montserrat, West Indies, grew up in England and currently lives in New York. The fact that parts of Montserrat were destroyed by a volcanic eruption has influenced the direction of her work. Her current work is characterized by a collection of debris on the one hand, while also focusing on notions of partial evidence, remains of things petrified, and traces of last moments. Her installations are made up of plaster casts of everyday objects, like paper plates, and arranged in architectural and formal configurations. She has an extensive exhibition history that includes the Tate Modern, London, and major galleries in the United Kingdom and the United States.
