Alice Awards' Artist Category

Today, artists use a wide range of formats; hence the Artist Category of the Alice Awards-Artistic Landmarks in Contemporary Experience-recognizes twelve (12) sub-categories and is designed to promote fluidity and flexibility in contemporary art. Winners in the artist category represent widely differing forms of visual art, but are united by their dual commitment to carefully defined practice and the advancement of contemporary visual art.

Emerging Artist

So, what is the next generation of artists? The Alice Society is very keen to contribute to the open participation of younger artists in the dynamic development of contemporary art - and lack of restraint is key, with all media and materials eligible. Of particular interest in this category are those artists that explore the impact of contemporary art on our world and life experience.

Landmark Artist Book

Landmark Collaborative Art

Work together - co-operation as an art form. This category aims to support collaborative art practices as an emerging and compelling trajectory within the international contemporary art scene, and the collaborative art category exists to encourage the inter-human sphere between people, communities, individuals, groups and social networks in contemporary art.

Landmark Artist-Curator

Overlapping is essential - and artists who curate encourage the overlapping and complementarity of the expanding role of artists and curators. Of particular interest in this category are artistic practices that expand beyond the boundaries of the production of objects, and consider curatorial impulses, gestures and practices such as selecting, displaying, editing and interpretation.

Landmark Public Art

Art outside museums and galleries must also be supported and encouraged - serving the community or individuals is what this category is all about, and eligible projects are works of art that come into the public domain that may be intentionally ephemeral, as in the case of temporary installations and performance pieces, located in a public space (both inside and outside), or a permanent feature in a landscape.

Landmark Internet Art

The Internet has had such a profound impact on every aspect of everyday life, and art is no exception - the aim of this category is to encourage aesthetic experiences via the 'Net.

Landmark Network Art

The aim of this category is to discover and encourage art works that have ceased to be primarily a physical entity, such as artistic ideas that can be applied to different places, processes and activities - these don't fit into traditional museum and gallery spaces but, in collaboration with these spaces, network art may expand the normal perception of the gallery's role and influence how the gallery may be perceived as an institution.

Landmark Political Art

This category seeks to encourage artistic practices that have a relation with 'the political' and challenge established hegemonies, for example cultural, political, and social or other hegemonic spheres of influence. It's no longer 'art for art's sake' - these works have far more to say.

Landmark Performance Art

Breaking the fourth wall - this award seeks to honour individual visual artists and collaborative artists for using the body and behaviour as a medium for artistic creation, and to encourage the critical role of live performance in 21st-century visual art and to encourage new performance directions.
